Bulls Split Day One Action at Wofford Invitational

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The University at Buffalo softball team (2-9, 0-0 MAC) started the weekend with a day one split against their competition at the Wofford Invitational. The Bulls took down the North Dakota Fighting Hawks, 12-2, before falling to the Wofford Terriers in the bottom of the seventh, 5-4.
Mia Mitchell had a career day as she went 6-for-8 from the plate with 4 RBIs, 2 home runs, 4 runs scored and 2 stolen bases.
GAME 1 VS. NORTH DAKOTA
The Bulls dominated the North Dakota Fighting Hawks on Friday morning with a 12-2 mercy victory in five innings. Buffalo took a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Mia Mitchell scored on a wild pitch. Isabella Smithson put the ball in play and forced a fielding error by the shortstop that scored Emily Gorman.
The Fighting Hawks tied the game in the top of the second. The Bulls immediately responded as Gorman hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Talynn Williams. The Bulls led 3-2 after the second.
Lily Lauck started the bottom of the third with a single to left. Smithson then reached base off a fielding error by the second baseman to put runners on first and second. Ardyn Hopf flew out to right which allowed Lauck to advance to third. Ava Thelen hit a sacrifice that scored Lauck. The Bulls took a 4-2 lead after the third.
After a leadoff walk by North Dakota, the Bulls recorded three straight out with a fielder's choice and a double play.
The Bulls put the game away in the fourth inning as they scored 8 runs on 7 hits. Reagan Terwilliger started the inning with a walk and then stole second base. Mitchell hit an RBI single to left that scored Terwilliger. Mitchell followed Terwilliger's shoes and stole second. Gorman hit an RBI single to left that scored Mitchell and forced a pitching change leading 6-2. Abbey Nagel kept the inning going with a single through the left side advancing Gorman to second. The runners then moved up on a wild pitch. With two runners in scoring position, Lauck hit a 2 RBI doubles to left center to put the Bulls in front 8-2. Lauck moved up to third on a wild pitch. Ardyn Hopf hit her first career double to right center that scored Lauck. Williams reached base by a hit by pitch to extend the inning. Terwilliger got in on the action and doubled to left center scoring both Hopf and Williams to make it an 11-2 lead. In Mitchell's second at bat of the inning, she singled to left center to score Terwilliger and make it a 12-2 game.
Genevieve Longsdorf closed out the game in the top of the fifth inning with a strikeout and a walk. Emily Watters took home her first win of the season with 4 innings pitched and allowing 2 runs on 5 hits and a walk. She struck out 2 batters on the day.
Mitchell led the way as she went 4-for-4 with 2 RBIs, 2 runs and 2 stolen bases. This is the 27th time in program history that a Bull recorded 4 hits in a single game. Gorman, Lauck and Terwilliger each had 2 RBIs.
GAME 2 AT WOFFORD
Mia Mitchell's offense carried over into the second game of the day as she led the game off against the Terriers with a solo home run. The Terriers tied the game at 1 in the bottom of the first.
The game remained 1-1 until the top of the fifth when the Bulls hit back-to-back home runs courtesy of Mitchell and Emily Gorman. The Bulls took a 3-1 lead which they then added to in the sixth inning as Reagan Terwilliger scored on an error from the center fielder after Gorman put it in play. The Bulls led 4-1 headed into the bottom of the sixth.
The Terriers rallied in the final two innings. They scored a pair of runs in the sixth to make it a 1 run game headed to the final inning. The Bulls failed to add any insurance runs in the top of the inning and the Terriers capitalized on it. The first batter grounded out to shortstop, but a crucial error by the Bulls put a runner on with 1 out. The Bulls managed to get the second out on a pop up to third base. Wofford tied the game with an RBI double. The next batter singled through the right side that brought home the winning run.
The Bulls are back in action tomorrow at 10 a.m. against Tennessee State followed by North Dakota at 12:30 p.m.
