Bulls Travel to Akron on Saturday

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team (16-2, 5-2 MAC) closes out the month of January with a pair of road contests, beginning on Saturday at Akron. It is the second game of a doubleheader with the Akron men, with tipoff scheduled for 4:30pm.
The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ with Michael Reghi (play-by-play) and Jeff Phelps (color) announcing and can be heard on ESPN 1520 and the Varsity Network with Jack Kreuzer on the call.
This is the 62nd overall meeting between Buffalo and Akron, with the Bulls owning a 35-26 series advantage. The Bulls and Zips split the two-game series a season ago.
Buffalo led for all but one minute and 17 seconds in a 72-55 win over the Ohio Bobcats at Alumni Arena on Wednesday night. Three Bulls scored in double figures led by Chellia Watson who scored a game-high 20 points, including five second-half three-pointers. Sophomore Kirsten Lewis-Williams stuffed the stat sheet with 13 points, eight rebounds and six assists while Ariana Seawell also scored in double figures in an efficient evening in which she recorded 10 points on 5-of-5 shooting from the floor and five rebounds, including the 500th of her career, in 12 minutes of action. Seniors Noelani Cornfield and Sitota Gines just missed out on double figures with nine points each.
The Bulls, one of two MAC teams ranked in the top 15 of the Mid-Major Top 25, are led offensively by Watson who is averaging 19.4 points per game. Lewis-Williams (13.6 ppg) is also averaging in double figures while Cornfield is averaging 9.9 points per contest while leading the team and ranking 30th nationally in assists per game (5.2) and Alexis Davis is leading the team in rebounding (6.2 rpg).
As a team, the Bulls lead the league in scoring offense (76.1), scoring margin (+18.1), field goal defense (.361), 3FG defense (.259) and turnover margin (+8.2) while also ranking in the top three in scoring defense (57.9), field goal percentage (.446), assists (16.8), steals per game (10.7) and free throw percentage (.784).
The Akron Zips are 9-10 overall, and 3-4 in league play, after falling 76-54 at Miami (OH) on Wednesday. The Zips are led offensively by Alexus Mobley who is averaging 12.4 ppg. Teniesha Clarke (10.8 ppg) and Shelbee Brown (10.7 ppg) are also averaging in double figures, with the later also leading the team in rebounding (8.1 rpg).
Akron has been very successful at James A. Rhodes Arena, owning a 139-91 record dating back to the 2004-05 season. Akron ranks second in the MAC in blocked shots (3.53), fourth in free throw percentage (.738) and fifth in offensive rebounds (11.8) and defensive rebounds (26.1) per game. The Zips have proven to be strong in the paint, averaging 32.4 points per game for 616 total points.
