BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team (15-2, 4-2 MAC) concludes the homestand on Wednesday night as they welcome the Ohio Bobcats to Alumni Arena for a 6pm contest.
The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ with Paul Peck (play-by-play) and Heather Prusak (color) announcing and can be heard on ESPN 1520 and the Varsity Network with Jack Kreuzer on the call.
This is the 51st overall meeting between Buffalo and Ohio with the Bulls owning a 29-21 series advantage. The Bulls swept both matchups a year ago.
In a battle of the top defensive teams in the Mid-American Conference, Buffalo showed their defensive prowess in a big way as they held Miami (OH) to just five fourth quarter points to complete the second-half comeback in a 59-51 win over the RedHawks on Saturday. Sophomore Kirsten Lewis-Williams put the team on her back, scoring a career-high 29 points and pulling down 10 rebounds for her second career double-double. Fifth year guard Noelani Cornfield stuffed the stat sheet with 13 points, six rebounds and six assists and Chellia Watson added 10 points. Senior Sitota Gines was the X-factor for the Bulls on the defensive end of the floor as she recorded a career-best nine steals, one shy the single-game school record.
The Bulls, one of three MAC teams ranked in the Mid-Major Top 25, are led offensively by Watson who is averaging 19.4 points per game. Lewis-Williams (13.6 ppg) is also averaging in double figures while Cornfield is averaging 9.9 points per contest while leading the team and ranking 34th nationally in assists per game (5.1) and Alexis Davis is leading the team in rebounding (6.4 rpg).
As a team, the Bulls lead the league in scoring offense (76.3), scoring margin (+18.2), field goal defense (.360), 3FG defense (.259) and turnover margin (+8.1) while also ranking in the top three in scoring defense (58.1), field goal percentage (.448), assists (16.5), steals per game (10.5) and free throw percentage (.786).
The Ohio Bobcats are 3-13 overall, and 1-4 in league play, after falling 80-65 at Toledo on Saturday. The Bobcats are led offensively by Kennedi Watkins who is averaging 16.1 ppg. Bailey Tabeling is also averaging in double figures at 11.9 ppg and Monica Williams lead the team in rebounding (5.7 rpg). Watkins has scored in double figures in 11 games, including six 20+ point performances. Tabeling, a 2024 All-Freshman Team selection, has started every game, averaging a team-high 30.7 minutes per contest. She leads the team in assists and steals.
As a team, the Bobcats lead the league in three-point field goals attempted per game (25.3) while ranking third in threes made per game (7.5) and fifth in steals per game (7.9).
Up next, Buffalo will head back on the road for a pair of games, beginning on Saturday, January 25 at Akron. Tipoff from James A. Rhodes Arena is set for 4:30pm.
