BUFFALO, NY – For the second straight game, a second half rally came up short as the University at Buffalo women's basketball team (14-10, 7-6 MAC) fell to Northern Illinois 66-57 on Wednesday night at Alumni Arena.
Redshirt senior guard Chellia Watson led all scorers with 16 points to go with seven rebounds and four assists. Kirsten Lewis-Williams also scored in double figures with 14 points while Alexis Davis recorded a double-double with 11 points a career-high with 12 rebounds.
The Bulls got the ball inside early as Lewis-Williams posted up her defender before Watson got a floater in the lane to drop and Kiara Johnson finished off glass to put UB up 6-2 but the Huskies responded with a 6-0 run to take an 8-6 lead at the media timeout. NIU extended their run to 10-0 to go up by six at the 3:27 mark before Lewis-Williams scored in the paint on back-to-back possessions and then sliced through the Huskies defense and finished off glass at the buzzer to cut the NIU lead to 19-14 at the end of the first.
NIU opened the second quarter on a 10-2 run before Hattie Ogden hit a triple from the wing to stop the run, but the Huskies would lead 31-19 at the media timeout. Watson and Davis got jumpers to fall on back-to-back possessions to pull UB within seven, but the Huskies answered with a triple to go back up by 10 and they would lead 33-25 at the half.
The Huskies scored on their first two possessions of the third quarter to go up by 12, but the Bulls responded with a 7-0 run, capped by an offensive rebound putback and one bucket from Davis and a fastbreak layup by Watson, to cut the NIU lead to five at the media timeout. Ogden hit a triple out of the timeout to pull UB within two and later, Watson grabbed a rebound and raced up court for a transition jumper before Ogden hit another three to pull UB within two at the end of the third.
Buffalo continued to attack as Lewis-Williams and Rana Elhusseini scored layups on two straight possessions and later, Elhusseini grabbed an offensive rebound and found Lewis-Williams for a baseline layup to pull UB within three at the 7:22 mark. Davis skied up for an offensive rebound putback to cut the lead to four, but the visitors answered with a layup to take a 59-53 lead at the media timeout. NIU scored on a second chance layup to go up by eight with 3:22 and a pair of last-ditch layups by Watson wouldn't be enough as the Huskies secured the victory from the free throw line.
Buffalo maintained a 38-34 advantage in the paint and edged the Huskies on the glass, 43-40, including turning 13 offensive rebounds into 16 second chance points, but they turned the ball over 11 times and NIU capitalized, scoring 14 points off UB miscues.
Up next, Buffalo concludes the homestand on Saturday, February 24 against Ohio.
