BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team (15-10, 8-6 MAC) used a strong start to propel themselves to a 67-54 win over Ohio at Alumni Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The Bulls were led offensively by Chellia Watson who scored a game-high 21 points to go with seven rebounds and four assists. Freshman Alexis Davis notched her second straight double-double, recording a career-high 16 points and matching a career-best with 12 rebounds, while senior Rana Elhusseini and sophomore Hattie Ogden added nine points each.
Ohio got hot from deep hitting three triples early, but the Bulls got going as Elhusseini hit a three of her own, Kirsten Lewis-Williams hit Davis on the block with a beautiful pass for a layup and then found Watson for a second fastbreak layup, to pull UB within one at the first media timeout. Buffalo continued to take over, as they closed the quarter on a 17-2 run, including a pair of triples by Paula Lopez and an and-one bucket by Davis off a great feed from Sitota Gines, to give the Bulls a 27-13 lead at the end of the first.
The UB offense hit a lull to start the second quarter and Ohio took advantage as they used an 8-0 run to cut the lead to 27-19 at the 3:55 mark. The Bulls would continue to struggle as the Bobcats extended the run to 10-2 to pull within six at the half.
Buffalo found its rhythm out of the locker room as the Bulls opened the third quarter on a 12-2 run, capped by an offensive rebound putback by Davis and a pair of threes from Ogden and Watson, to put UB up 41-25 and force an Ohio timeout at the 5:59 mark. Ogden continued to heat up as she drilled her second triple of the quarter to give UB a 19-point lead at the media timeout. The Bobcats used a 7-0 run to pull within 12 with three minutes remaining before Watson hit Lewis-Williams with a beautiful crosscourt pass for a layup and then Watson converted on an and-one bucket and then hit a floater in the final seconds to give Buffalo a 53-39 lead at the end of the third.
It was a sluggish start to the fourth quarter for both teams as the Bobcats utilized a 6-2 run to cut the lead to 10 at the media timeout, but the visitors would get no closer than nine the rest of the way as UB went 10-of-12 from the free throw line in the closing minutes to secure the victory.
Buffalo held a 26-24 advantage in the paint and edged the Huskies on the glass, 38-32, while also scoring 12 fastbreak points and 13 points off Ohio turnovers. The Bulls also cashed in at the charity stripe, finishing 18-of-23 on the day.
Up next, Buffalo will travel to Bowling Green for a clash with the Falcons on Wednesday, February 28 at 7pm.
