Elhusseini Records Triple Double, Bulls Dominant in 62-46 Win Over Southern Miss

BUFFALO, NY – Senior guard Rana Elhusseini made history, recording a triple-double and inspiring the hundreds of girls in attendance on National Girls and Women in Sports Day, as the University at Buffalo women's basketball put forth a dominant effort in a 62-46 win over Southern Miss in the MAC-SBC Challenge on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Arena.
Elhusseini's triple-double was just the third in program history as she finished the day with 11 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists. The 12 assists are tied for fourth-most all-time in a single game.
Redshirt senior guard Chellia Watson led all scorers with 22 points. Sophomore Hattie Ogden and freshman Alexis Davis both recorded a double-double, with Davis pulling down a career-high 12 rebounds and Ogden matching her career-best with 10. It was the first time since 2018 that the Bulls have had three players record a double-double in the same game.
It was a slow start for both teams as the Bulls led 5-4 at the first media timeout. Watson knocked down a jumper in the paint and Kirsten Lewis-Williams hit Ogden on the block with a great pass for a layup to give the Bulls a 9-7 lead at the end of the first.
The Bulls got going offensively early in the second quarter, scoring on three straight possessions, to go up by three and they would lead 17-12 at the media timeout. Elhusseini hit Watson for a jumper in the paint before the visitors used a mini run to cut the UB lead to two at the 1:29 mark, but Watson took her defender off the bounce and cashed in on a mid-range jumper in the final seconds to put UB up 21-17 at the half.
Graduate student forward Kiara Johnson and Watson scored on back-to-back possessions early in the third quarter to put UB up by nine, but the Lady Eagles responded with a 6-0 run to pull within three. Ogden answered with a big three in the corner and Watson capped an 8-2 run with a triple of her own to give the Bulls a 34-25 lead at the media timeout. Buffalo then turned defense into offense as they closed the quarter on a 17-6 run, including layups by Lewis-Williams and Elhusseini, and triple from the senior in the final seconds, to give the Bulls a 43-29 lead at the end of the third.
Ogden continued to heat up from deep as she drilled a triple on UB's second possession of the fourth quarter before the Bulls got out and ran as Ogden and Davis scored back-to-back fastbreak layups before Elhusseini and Davis executed an out-of-bounds play to perfection to put UB up by 22 at the media timeout and that would be more than enough to secure the victory as the visitors got no closer than 14 the rest of the way.
Buffalo competed inside and on the boards, holding a 32-30 edge in the paint and a 43-40 edge on the glass, while also scoring 14 fastbreak points and 13 points off Southern Miss turnovers.
Up next, Buffalo will have a midweek bye before resuming league action on Saturday, February 17 at Akron.
