AKRON, Ohio – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team came up short in a 65-54 loss to Akron at James A Rhodes Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman Kirsten Lewis-Williams recorded a new career-high with 22 points to lead all scorers while Alexis Davis also scored in double figures with 13 points and six rebounds.
The Bulls struggled offensively in the early going as the Zips took a 12-4 lead at the media timeout. The hosts then extended their run to 7-0 to go up 16-4 and force a UB timeout at the two-minute mark. Lewis-Williams ended the Buffalo scoring drought with a spin move in the lane to pull the Bulls within 10 at the end of the first.
The teams traded baskets early in the second quarter before the Zips used a 6-0 run to take a 14-point lead at the media timeout and they would close the quarter on a 9-2 run to take a 35-14 lead at the half.
The Bulls got some momentum offensively early in the third as Lewis-Williams hit Sitota Gines on a high-low feed for a layup before Chellia Watson knocked down a triple and Davis sliced down the lane for a bucket to pull UB within 19 at the 5:53 mark. The teams traded baskets before Davis got to the rim again for a layup, this time plus the foul, at the media timeout. Buffalo continued to battle as Lewis-Williams attacked on back-to-back possessions and went 4-for-4 from the charity stripe before Watson scored in transition, Davis finished off glass and Hattie Ogden capped the run with a triple at the buzzer to pull the Bulls within 14 at the end of the third.
Akron opened the fourth quarter on a 9-4 run to go back up by 19 at the media timeout. The Bulls continued to fight as Rana Elhusseini knocked down a pair from the free throw line before Lewis-Williams drove and finished off glass and Davis drove strong for a layup in traffic to pull UB within 13 and force an Akron timeout with 2:46 remaining. Later, Elhusseini got fouled shooting a triple and converted all three before Lewis-Williams got to the line and knocked down a pair herself cut the lead to 10 with 49 seconds to go but that would be as close as they would get as the comeback fell short.
Up next, Buffalo will return to Western New York for a two-game homestand beginning on Wednesday, February 21 against Northern Illinois.
