BUFFALO, N.Y. – In their only home game in the month of December, the University at Buffalo men's basketball team (5-4, 0-0 MAC) took down the visiting Pitt-Bradford Panthers on Tuesday evening, 100-65. The Bulls scored 100 points for the first time since defeating Eastern Michigan, 102-97, on Feb. 7, 2023.
Anquan Boldin Jr. had a game-high 19 points with an efficient night from the floor. He shot 7-for-8 including knocking down a pair of three-pointers. Ryan Sabol continues to score in double figures as he scored 18 points. He made 4 three-pointers to bring his season total to 34. Sabol has now made at least 2 threes in every game this season and has made a three in 15 straight games dating back to last season. Tyson Dunn scored 14 points as Brayden Jackson and Bryson Wilson scored 11 and 10, respectively.
Jackson grabbed a career-high 6 rebounds as Noah Batchelor led all players with 9 rebounds and 2 blocks. Dunn's 7 steals tied him for fifth in program history for most steals in single game. Buffalo's 17 steals are tied for seventh in program history for most steals in a single game.
The Bulls shot 51.6% from the floor while their defense limited the Panthers to 31.3%, a season-low by opponents. Pitt-Bradford totaled 83 total shots from the field, including 41 from three. From records found, Buffalo has never faced 80+ shots in a game or 40+ three-pointers in a single game.
Buffalo tallied a season-high 23 assists.
The Bulls improved to 4-0 on the season when they score at least 80 points, shoot over 50.0% from the floor, outscore opponents by 10+ in the paint and outscore them off turnovers.
Pitt-Bradford entered the game scoring at least 100 points in four of their five games on the season, including 110 points in three games. Their fast-paced tempo was an issue for the Bulls in the early stages of the game. At the 14:34 mark of the first half, the Panthers took a 12-8 lead, their largest lead of the night. Buffalo regained the lead after a Wilson layup just 50-seconds later. The Bulls led the rest of the evening. By the half, the Bulls held a 46-30 lead.
Buffalo shot 52.8% in the second half as they continued to drive to the paint. They scored 34 of their 54 points in half in the paint. Buffalo finished with 50 points in the paint, the second time on the season they scored at least 50 in the paint. The Bulls ballooned their lead to 37 late in the game at 100-63. The 37-point margin was their largest lead of the season thus far.
"I'm really happy that we were able to get all our scholarship guys in tonight and get experience in tonight's game," stated Head Coach George Halcovage III. "Everybody was able to contribute to this win. I thought we did a really good job of playing unselfishly the entire game. We have to obviously continue to get better and improve at our turning the ball over. We are just not there yet in terms of taking care of the ball and really valuing the ball in every possession. However, Pitt-Bradford plays one of the most unique styles in all levels of college basketball. We knew that going to the game. We knew they were going to press us in every situation, throw line changes out there. I don't even think we could have that many guys on our roster, they played that many. So, you just kind of kind of deal with things, and it was like a hockey game for us, right? I would have liked for us not to give them as many odd man rushes based off of us turning the ball over. However, when we did break their press, we did a really good job of sharing the ball, making unselfish plays. We did a good job getting to the foul line and making them pay that way against our physicality. We're going to learn from this and move forward and then get ready to go into a really tough environment on Saturday."
The Bulls are back in action on Saturday at St. Bonaventure (7-1, 0-0 A10) at 4 p.m. on ESPN+.
