Bulls Fall to Central Michigan on Friday Evening

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The University at Buffalo women's volleyball team (12-12, 8-3 MAC) fell to the Central Michigan Chippewas (17-5. 8-2 MAC) on Friday evening (25-23, 27-29, 23-25, 21-25). With the loss, the Bulls fall to third place in the Mid-American Conference standings.
Katrin Trebichavska had a match-high 18 kills and 16 digs as she earned her 10th double-double of the season. Manoela Forlin and Abby Leigh added 12 and 11 kills, respectively.
Defensively, Maria Futey finished with 16 digs as A. Leigh had 5 total blocks.
Both teams entered the match as two of the best serving teams in the MAC, but the Chippewas had 10 aces to Buffalo's 5. In total there were 22 service errors, 12 of which were by the home team.
Central Michigan was 25th in the nation in opponent hit percentage at .163, but the Bulls managed to outhit them, .230 to .216. It was a tight match throughout as there were 41 ties and 19 lead changes.
Buffalo fell into a 3-0 hole at the start of the match but was able to tie the set at 4. In just the first set, there were 13 ties and 7 lead changes. Buffalo's largest lead was three at 24-21, but the Chippewas fought off two set points. Forlin closed the set with a kill for the 25-23 win. Buffalo hit .359 in the set. Headed into the match, the Bulls were 10-1 on the season after winning the first set.
Once again, there wasn't any room for error in the second set. The Bulls outhit the Chippewas, .250 to .106, but couldn't hang on for the win. Buffalo led 19-14, but Central Michigan was able to snap off a 13-6 run to win, 27-25.
Both offenses clicked in the third set as they both hit over .350. Buffalo trailed 7-1, but managed a 9-2 run to take a 10-9 lead. Late in the set at 22 apiece, Central Michigan had momentum swing their way as they won 25-23.
Buffalo had a match-low -.026 hitting percentage in the fourth set. The Bulls trailed down the stretch but tied the set at 18 to force a Central Michigan timeout. Unfortunately, Buffalo couldn't slow down the Chippewas as they finished the match on a 7-3 run for the win, 25-21.
The Bulls are back in action tomorrow as they look to split the weekend series against the Chippewas. The match will start at 4 p.m. on ESPN+.
