Bulls’ Comeback Falls Short at Central Michigan

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The University at Buffalo women's volleyball team (12-13, 8-4 MAC) nearly completed a five-set comeback win against the Central Michigan Chippewas (18-5, 9-2 MAC) on Saturday evening (20-25, 23-25, 25-18, 26-24,12-15).
On the night, Katrin Trebichavska led all players with 23 kills and four aces. She added 13 digs as she now has 11 double-doubles on the year. Luli Arcucci tallied 14 kills and four total blocks. Abby Leigh registered nine kills, three aces and seven total blocks. Maria Futey led the Bulls with 20 digs.
Statistically, it was a fairly even match. Both teams totaled 60 kills, 80.0 points, while the Bulls outhit the Chippewas, .231 to .213.
Central Michigan snatched a 2-0 set lead after winning 25-20 and 25-23. In the first two sets, the Chippewas barely outhit the Bulls, .209 to .203, however, the Bulls had more kills, 27 to 21. Unfortunately, Buffalo had 12 service errors in those sets.
Buffalo's offense clicked in the third set. They had an attack percentage of .367 with 15 kills and three aces. Trebichavska had seven kills in just the third set. After taking a 4-3 lead, the Bulls held the lead for the rest of the set for a 25-18 win.
The Bulls came back for the fourth set looking to force the decisive fifth set. In a nail biter, the Bulls came back for the set win. The Chippewas led 15-13 at the media timeout and forced Buffalo to use their timeouts leading 20-17 and 23-20. After disposing their timeouts, it sparked a 6-1 run as the Bulls won 26-24 on a Trebichavska ace.
The Chippewas gained momentum in the fifth set as they outhit Buffalo, .241 to .174. Central Michigan had 11 kills to Buffalo's six. The Bulls were able to get four total blocks in the set, but it wasn't enough as Central Michigan came out with a 15-12 win.
Milestones were made on the weekend for the Bulls. With her performance on the weekend, Mandy Leigh broke the program record in career assists passing Amy Brown's (2002-05) record of 4,349. Trebichavska surpassed 1,000 kills in her career at Buffalo as she's up to 1,014. A. Leigh has now played the most sets in program history, passing Candi Sims (1993-96) and her 503 sets played. Futey moved to third in career digs with 1,542.
The Bulls are back in action on Friday, Nov.1 at 6 p.m. when they host the Northern Illinois Huskies (3-18, 1-10 MAC).
