Abby Leigh Reaches 1,000 Career Kills as Buffalo Sweeps the Huskies

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo women's volleyball team (13-13, 9-4 MAC) swept the visiting Northern Illinois Huskies (3-19, 1-11 MAC) on Friday evening (25-9, 25-20, 29-27). On the season, the Bulls are now 9-1 at home.
After a .291 hitting performance by the Bulls on the night, they improved to 12-0 this season when they hit at least .201. Buffalo held the Huskies to a .172 hitting percentage.
Katrin Trebichavska led all players with 14 kills as Abby Leigh added 10 of her own. A. Leigh tallied her 17th career error-free performance as she went 10-for-20 (.500) on the attack. After her performance, A. Leigh surpassed 1,000 career kills.
From the service line, the Bulls finished the match with nine aces compared to Northern Illinois's three.
Defensively, the Bulls finished with six total blocks to the Huskies' three. A. Leigh had a match-high four blocks as her sister, Mandy Leigh, had three. Maria Futey tallied a match-high 14 digs on the evening.
Buffalo dominated the first set as they won 25-9. The Bulls outhit the Huskies, .409 to .048. With the Bulls leading 8-2, Northern Illinois called their first timeout. It didn't slow down the Bulls' momentum as they went on an 8-0 to go up 19-5. In the run, Trebichavska had three consecutive aces.
The Huskies snatched their first lead of the evening as they led 2-0 in the second set. Buffalo battled back to take a 5-4 lead and eventually forced Northern Illinois to use a timeout trailing 9-7. The Bulls' offense only had two attack errors in the set compared to the Huskies' seven, but the opposition kept it close. At 19-16, the Huskies used their final timeout, but the Bulls came away with the 25-20 set win. Buffalo outhit the Huskies, .368 to .167.
Northern Illinois nearly spoiled the Bulls' perfect evening as there were 10 ties and seven lead changes in the third set. After a 2-1 lead, Buffalo didn't lead again until 18-17. The Bulls were up 24-23, but the Huskies fought of match point and had their own chance at taking the set, but an Emma Converse kill ended their hopes. Northern Illinois fought off two more match points, but it wasn't enough as the Bulls took the set, 29-27.
The Bulls are back in action tomorrow against the Huskies at 4 p.m.
