BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo women's volleyball team (12-11, 8-2 MAC) will travel to Mount Pleasant, Mich. to face the Central Michigan Chippewas (16-5, 7-2 MAC). The weekend series will begin Friday night at 6 p.m. with the weekend wrapping up on Saturday at 4 p.m. Both matches will be aired on ESPN+. Headed into the weekend, the Bulls hold the top spot in the Mid-American Conference standings at 8-2 with both Central Michigan and Bowling Green in second place at 7-2.
The all-time series against Central Michigan has been in favor of the Chippewas as they lead the series, 20-9, but the Bulls are winners of the last two meetings. Head Coach Scott Smith is 3-3 against Central Michigan in his tenure at Buffalo. The last time Buffalo picked up a road win against the Chippewas was on Oct. 26, 2019, in a 3-2 decision. The Bulls' sixth year player in Abby Leigh recorded 4 kills, 2 aces, 8 total blocks and 11.0 points in the win.
The Chippewas were picked seventh in the MAC Preseason Coaches' Poll with 50 points. Last season they finished with a 15-15 overall record.
The Bulls are coming off a 3-2 win over the Akron Zips on Tuesday evening in Alumni Arena. In the win Manoela Forlin and Katrin Trebichavska had match-high 23 kills on the night as Abby Leigh chipped in 11 of her own. A. Leigh led the team with three aces as the Bulls tallied nine. Mandy Leigh had 51 assists and 4 total blocks. Her sister, A. Leigh also finished with 4 total blocks. Trebichavska had a match-high 17 digs as Maria Futey had 16. With her performance, Futey surpassed 1,500 career digs.
Sitting with 1,506 career digs, Futey is 20 digs from passing Ann Reed's (1988-91) 1,525 career digs for third in program history. Another milestone that looks to be broken is the all-time sets played record. A. Leigh is closing in on it as she has played 498 sets at Buffalo. Candi Sims (1993-96) holds the record with 503 sets played.
The Bulls' offense continues to be at the top of the conference. Buffalo is the only team in the MAC to have three players in the top-10 in points per set. Katrin Trebichavska has the second-best mark in the MAC with 4.76 points per set as Manoela Forlin is sixth (4.01) and Abby Leigh is 10th (3.79).
As a team, they're one of the best all-around squads in the MAC. Going with their 8-2 first place record in conference play, Buffalo holds the top marks in assists per set (13.17), kills per set (14.11), aces per set (2.00).
The Bulls are 19th in the nation with 150 total aces. Last week, they added a three-set match season-high 11 aces against Toledo on Friday night. Trebichavska leads the MAC in aces per set with 0.54. On the season, she has 35 which is 23rd in the country. The outside hitter is currently eighth in program history with 161 career aces.
Following this weekend, the Bulls are back at home on Friday, Nov. 1 against Northern Illinois (3-16, 1-8 MAC) for a weekend slate.
