BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team looks to bounce back with a win as they host the Akron Zips in the annual Pink Game, sponsored by Great Lakes Cancer Care, at Alumni Arena on Saturday at 2pm.
The game will be streamed on ESPN+ with Paul Peck (play-by-play) and Matt Mattia (color) announcing and can be heard on the radio on 1520 AM or on the Varsity Network with Jack Kreuzer on the call.
This is the 60th overall meeting between Buffalo and Akron with the Bulls owning a 34-25 series advantage. The teams split a pair of contests last season, with each team winning on its home floor.
Buffalo jumped out to an early lead but couldn't withstand a late Ball State rally as the Bulls fell to the Cardinals 67-62 at Worthen Arena on Wednesday night. The Bulls were led offensively by redshirt senior guard Chellia Watson who scored a game-high 28 points while freshman Kirsten Lewis-Williams set a new career-high with 21 points to go with eight rebounds.
Watson leads MAC and ranks seventh in the nation in scoring at 22.8 points per game to go with 4.2 rebounds and 3.0 assists per contest, while also shooting 46.9% from three-point range, which puts her in the top 20 nationally. As a team, Buffalo is ranked in the top three in the MAC in scoring defense (64.1), field goal percentage (.429), field goal defense (.377) and three-point field goal percentage (.346). The Bulls are averaging 32.3 points per game in the paint while also scoring 10.0 ppg in transition, and are turning defense into offense, averaging 16 points per contest off opponent's turnovers.
The Akron Zips are 6-7 overall and 1-2 in league action after defeating Central Michigan 70-62 for their first MAC win on Wednesday. The Zips are led offensively by preseason All-MAC first team selection Reagan Bass who is the only player in the league to be averaging a double-double at 19.9 points and 11.8 rebounds per game. Morgan Haney (10.8 ppg, 2.6 apg) is also scoring in double figures while Lanae Riley (9.1 ppg, 4.2 rpg) has also been a main contributor.
