AKRON, OH - Sophomore Katie Krohn recorded a pair of goals to lead a dominant team performance as the University at Buffalo women's soccer team (4-1-3) defeated Akron 2-0 at FirstEnergy Stadium on Thursday night to open Mid-American Conference play.
It was a battle of possession in the early going before UB got things going as Krohn had a pair of looks, the first saved by Sara Bower and the second missing just wide of target.
Later, in the 14th minute, Sarah Woods made a great run up the left side and fired a shot on net that banged off the top right corner of the crossbar and to the feet of Krohn but she was unable to convert on the rebound.
Buffalo continued to press, and it paid off in the 16th minute as Leah Wengender found Arianna Zumpano who got possession in the middle of the field and slid a great ball through to a streaking Katie Krohn who fired a shot off the bottom right corner of the post and past a diving Bower to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead.
The Bulls added to their lead less than 10 minutes later as Wengender controlled the loose ball and found Krohn who took advantage of the space presented and drilled a laser into the top corner of the net from about 25 yards out for her sixth goal of the year to put UB up 2-0 and that would be the score at the half.
It was a dominating performance for Buffalo over the opening 45 minutes of play as the Bulls outshot the Zips 12-0, including 5-0 in shots on goal.
It was a back-and-forth affair to start the second half with neither team capitalizing in their final third. UB's Kaylin Ricci and Ashley Reyes had a pair of shots sail high over the crossbar in the 66th minute.
Akron recorded their first shot of the game in the 72nd minute and then had their first scoring chance of the night in the 74th minute as Kattie Stafford ripped a shot on target but Rebecca Winslow, on in relief of starter Lexie Thompson, made the lone save of the night for Buffalo. The Zips recorded a few more shots over the final minutes of play but none were on target as the Bulls closed out the victory.
The Bulls outshot the Zips 18-6 on the night, including a 5-1 advantage in shots on goal, and a 3-0 edge in corner kick opportunities. Thompson, Winslow and the UB backline earned their third shutout of the season. Krohn was named Player of the Game for her phenomenal efforts in the win.
"Always nice starting off conference play with a road win shutout," said head coach Shawn Burke. "While we are still missing that killer instinct, a lot of players stepped up tonight and there were definitely more positives than negatives."
Up next, Buffalo returns home to UB Stadium to host Ohio on Sunday, September 24 at 1pm.
