Bulls Host Northern Illinois in Final Homestand

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo softball team (11-33, 5-15 MAC) will host the Northern Illinois Huskies (22-23, 11-11 MAC) to close out their home portion of the 2023 schedule this weekend. Due to the forecast, the first game of the series will be played on Saturday at 10 a.m. with the Senior Ceremony prior to first pitch. Game two of the series will follow. The series will wrap up on Sunday at noon.
Buffalo enters the weekend with an 11-33 overall record and 5-15 in MAC play. The Bulls snapped a 14-game losing streak on Wednesday at Kent State, taking the contest 2-0. The Bulls are being led offensively by senior Alexis Lucyshyn (.267) and freshman Abbey Nagel (.255). Lucyshyn and Mia Mitchell each have five home runs on the season with Madison Fernimen (4), Sara Kelly (3), and Nagel (3) leading the way. Fernimen leads the Bulls in the RBI department as she has 19 on the season. Lucyshyn (16), Kelly (13), Mitchell (12), and Nagel (11) have double digit RBI seasons.
In the circle, Lucyshyn is 6-15 with a 3.00 ERA as she has struck out 148 batters in 135.1 innings pitched. The trio of Lucyshyn, Julia Tarantino, and Emily Watters have combined for a 4.12 ERA and 252 strikeouts.
The Huskies are coming off a series against the Western Michigan Broncos, as they won the final game of the series, 8-4. Northern Illinois is 11-11 in MAC play and currently sixth in the standings. Offensively, they're led by Kelly Walinski who holds a .355 batting average and 49 hits on the season. She has also hit in 33 Huskies this year. As a team, they hold a .352 on base percentage. Danielle Stewart leads the team in the circle with a 9-10 record and 3.39 ERA.
Following the series against Northern Illinois, the Bulls will wrap up their season at Ohio on Saturday, May 6 and Sunday, May 7.
