
Bulls Split Doubleheader at Kent State

KENT, Ohio – The University at Buffalo softball team (11-33, 5-15 MAC) split their doubleheader at the Kent State Golden Flashes (14-29, 9-12 MAC) on Wednesday afternoon. The Golden Flashes took game one 4-3, but the Bulls won game two by a score of 2-0. Doing so, the Bulls snapped a 14-game losing streak.
GAME 1 RECAP
Kent State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Golden Flashes padded to their lead in the third inning with a solo home run to center, taking a 2-0 lead.
In the fifth inning, the Bulls started to get the bats going. Lyla Ambrose led with a single to center. Tianna Williams reached on a fielder's choice. With runners on first and second, Julia Tarantino reached on a fielder's choice as Kent State recorded the first out of the inning at third. Avelyn Van Heyst grounded out to the second baseman, moving the runners over to second and third. With two outs, Madison Fernimen hit a three-run homer to left field giving the Bulls a 3-2 lead.
With both teams going scoreless in the sixth inning, the Golden Flashes tied the game in the bottom of the seventh to force extras. The Bulls went scoreless in the top of the eight, but it didn't take long for Kent State as they hit a walk-off leadoff solo home run.
Tarantino threw seven plus innings, striking out four batters and allowed four runs, three earned runs on seven hits.
Brianna Castro led the team with two hits, as Fernimen, Ambrose, and Tarantino had one each.
GAME 2 RECAP
The Bulls bounced back taking the final game of the series, 2-0. Mia Mitchell hit her fifth home run of the season in the second inning to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead.
Buffalo added an insurance run in the seventh inning as Tarantino doubled to right center, allowing Mykaela Martin to score from second.
The Golden Flashes were able to get the leadoff runner on in the seventh but couldn't capitalize behind Emily Watter's performance. Watters was lights out on the mound, as she threw a complete game shutout. She finished with three strikeouts, one walk, and allowed five hits.
Lily Lauck also recorded a hit for Buffalo.
The Bulls will wrap up their home portion of the schedule on Saturday and Sunday against the Northern Illinois Huskies. The team will honor their seniors after Sunday's game.
