BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's tennis team defeated Eastern Michigan 5-2 on Senior Day at Miller Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Bulls improve to 20-7 overall and finished with a 6-4 league mark, clinching a spot in next weekend's Mid-American Conference Tournament, hosted by Ball State.
The Bulls struck first as Pia Schwarz and Azra Deniz Comlek won 6-4 at first doubles and Ambre Amat and Deanne Choo clinched the doubles point for UB with a thrilling 7-6(1) victory at the third position.
Buffalo continued momentum into singles action as Amat won 6-3, 6-2 at fourth singles and Mariana Carvajal Torres followed with a straight sets victory of her own, winning 6-2, 6-2 at sixth singles to put UB up 3-0.
In a fitting tribute to a stellar five-year career, Schwarz clinched the match for the Bulls with a 6-1, 7-6(2) victory at first singles. Fellow fifth year Gabriella Akopyan put the finishing touches on the match with a 7-6, 6-4 win at fifth singles.
"After clinching a theatric doubles point, they really took the energy into singles and played their hearts out," said head coach Kristen Maines. "I'm so proud of the way they all competed, and to have Gabby get a win and Pia clinch the match for us, I couldn't think of a better way to end the regular season."
The Bulls secured the number three seed and will take on the hosts, the number two seeded Ball State Cardinals on Saturday, April 29 at 2pm in the second semifinal match of the day. For more details visit the tournament central page.
