Bulls Host Akron in Big Late Season Game on Wednesday

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team closes out the regular season with a pair of home games, beginning with a contest against the Akron Zips on Wednesday night at 6pm.
With two games remaining in the regular season, Akron sits in a tie for fifth place in the Mid-American Conference standings, while the Bulls are currently sitting one game outside of the top eight, and will need two wins in order to make it to the 2023 MAC Tournament in Cleveland.
The game will be streamed on ESPN+ with Paul Peck (play-by-play) and Matt Mattia (color) announcing and can be heard on the radio on ESPN 1520 AM or on the Varsity Network with Jack Kreuzer on the call.
This is the 59th overall meeting between Buffalo and Akron with the Bulls owning a 33-25 series advantage. The Bulls dropped their contest at James A. Rhodes Arena on January 28.
The Bulls picked up a massive road win on Saturday, defeating Bowling Green in wire-to-wire fashion at the Stroh Center. Eight Bulls found the box score, including four scoring in double figures led by fifth year guard Re'Shawna Stone who scored a game-high 23 points. Sophomore Emerita Mashaire recorded a career-high 16 points, Hatti Ogden scored 13 points and Jazmine Young added 12.
Stone is leading the Bulls in scoring at 17.0 ppg and has scored in double figures in 20 of the last 21 games while adding 5.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists per contest. She has elevated her game in MAC play as she ranks second in scoring (20.2 ppg), third in field goal percentage (.541) and three-point field goal percentage (.430) and sixth in assists per game (3.8). Zakiyah Winfield leads the team in rebounding and assists at 10.4 rpg and 3.9 apg while ranking second on the team in scoring at 14.4 ppg and has recorded 13 double-doubles on the season. She is the top rebounding guard in the nation and ranks in the top 25 in the nation in double-doubles, rebounds per game and defensive rebounds per game. Young is having a career year, scoring in double figures in 21 of 25 games and averaging 13.6 points and 1.6 assists per contest. The Bulls rank in the top half of the MAC in field goal percentage (.440), 3FG percentage (.430), scoring defense (65.6), assists per game (13.1) and assist-to-turnover ratio (+0.9).
The Akron Zips are 16-11 overall and 7-9 in the MAC after defeating Miami (OH) 88-80 on Saturday. They currently sit in a tie for fifth place in the MAC standings. Sophomore Reagan Bass leads the Zips in scoring and rebounding at 17.3 ppg and 7.5 rpg. Akron is balanced offensively as Molly Neitzel (11.7 ppg) and Dominique Camp (10.7 ppg, 3.8 apg) are also scoring in double figures. Camp ranks 26th in the nation in steals per game (2.63) and 24th in total steals (71), while Bass is 16th in free throws made (143). Akron is ranked 22nd in the NCAA in defensive rebounds (29.0), 28th in free throws made per contest (14.85), 35th in free throw percentage (.767), 34th in assists per outing (16.0) and 40th in blocks per game (4.3). The Zips have connected on five or more three pointers in 20 of its 27 games this season, and 73 of its last 90 contests overall. Akron is averaging 64.1 points per game in 11 road/neutral contests this season with Akron shooting 40 percent from the field, including a .308 mark from beyond the arc.
