KALAMAZOO, MI – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team scored first but ultimately fell 4-1 at Western Michigan at the WMU Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Bulls fall to 7-4-6 overall and 4-3-3 in league play.
Buffalo started fast once again as Katie Krohn broke free and fired a shot in stride, but it was saved by Lauren Boafo. UB got on the board a few minutes later as Krohn found space and ripped a shot on net that Boafo knocked away, but Arianna Zumpano was in the right place at the right time and she one-timed the rebound into the back of the net to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead.
The Broncos answered in the 22nd minute as Emily Pagett drilled a shot from about 30 yards out that sailed over a leaping Rebecca Winslow into the top left corner of the net to even the game at one.
The Bulls had their last scoring chance of the half in the 33rd minute as Sarah Woods sliced through the defense and fired a shot across the box but it rolled just wide of target and the game remained tied at the break.
The Broncos looked to go ahead in the 58th minute as they recorded a pair of shots on target, but Winslow came up with two big saves to escape the jam. Later, in the 68th minute, the Bulls strung together several passes, the last finding of foot of Krohn and she tried to put a ball on target but didn't quite get all of it and Boafo made the save. Â
The missed opportunities proved costly as Western Michigan sliced through the UB defense and Jen Blitchok capitalized, scoring to give the hosts a 2-1 lead and the Broncos added an insurance  goal a few minutes later to go up 3-1.
Buffalo looked to claw back in the 80th minute as Zumpano made slipped behind the defense and drilled a shot at Boafo but she made another great save, and the Broncos then went the other way and scored to make it 4-1 and that would be your final as Krohn and Zumpano made a pair of solid runs late in the game but were unable to score.
The Broncos outshot the Bulls 16-7, including a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal. Winslow recorded five saves while Boafo made four stops for WMU.
Up next, the Bulls close out the regular season on Thursday, October 26 as they welcome Kent State to UB Stadium for an afternoon matinee at 3pm.
