Bulls Open Two-Game Road Trip at Akron on Saturday

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team (8-8, 3-4 MAC) closes out the month of January with a trip to Akron, Ohio for a clash with the Zips on Saturday. It is the second game of a doubleheader, with tipoff from James A. Rhodes Arena set for 5pm.
The game will be streamed on ESPN+ with Michael Reghi (play-by-play) and Jeff Phelps (color) announcing and can be heard on the radio on AM 1400 or on the Varsity Network with Jack Kreuzer on the call.
This is the 58th overall meeting between Buffalo and Akron with the Bulls owning a 33-24 series advantage. The Bulls swept all three meetings last season, including an 82-43 victory in the MAC Tournament semifinals.
Despite a fantastic defensive effort, Buffalo couldn't score on their final possession to extend the game as they fell to Bowling Green 64-61 on Wednesday night. UB's dynamic backcourt trio led the way once again with Zakiyah Winfield pacing the Bulls with 20 points to go with seven rebounds, four assists and two steals. Fifth year guard Re'Shawna Stone scored 19 points to go with seven rebounds and three steals and Jazmine Young added 13 points, four rebounds and four assists.
Winfield leads the team in scoring, rebounding and assists at 14.9 ppg, 10.7 rpg and 3.9 apg and has recorded 10 double-doubles on the season. She is the top rebounding guard in the nation and ranks in the top 20 in the nation in double-doubles, rebounds per game and defensive rebounds per game. Stone is averaging 14.8 ppg and has scored in double figures in 12 straight games while adding 5.3 rebounds and 3.6 assists per contest. Young has scored in double figures in 13 of 16 games, including seven straight, and is averaging 14.1 points and 1.8 assists per contest. The Bulls lead the MAC in scoring defense (61.7) while ranking in the top half of the conference in rebounding defense (34.4), 3FG defense (29.1), field goal percentage (44.1), assists per game (13.1), assist-to-turnover ratio (+0.84) and scoring margin (+0.9).
The Akron Zips are 13-5 overall and 4-3 in the MAC after falling at Ball State 89-66 on Wednesday. Sophomore Reagan Bass leads the Zips in scoring and rebounding at 17.6 ppg and 7.4 rpg. Akron is balanced offensively as Dominique Camp (11.6 ppg, 3.7 apg), Molly Neitzel (10.8 ppg) and Layne Ferrell (10.7 ppg) are also scoring in double figures. Camp ranks sixth in the nation in steals per game (3.33) and 12th in steals (60), while Bass is 13th in free throws made (102), 14th in free throw attempts (130) and 68th in blocks per tilt (1.50), Ferrell is 18th in free throw percentage (.891) and Neitzel is 58th in blocks per game (1.56). Akron is ranked eighth in the NCAA in free throws made per contest (16.56), 11th in free throw percentage (.784), 18th in blocks per game (5.1), 22nd in defensive rebounds (29.5), 33rd in free throw attempts per tilt (21.1), 44th in assists per contest (16.0) and 64th in field goal percentage defense (37.4). The Zips have connected on five or more three pointers in 13 of its 18 games this season, and 65 of its last 81 contests overall.
