Bulls Split Doubleheader to Close Out UB Invite

BUFFALO, N.Y. β The University at Buffalo women's volleyball team (2-1, 0-0 MAC) split their doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Bulls fell to Xavier in their first match but came back strong to knock off Cleveland State.

The Bulls dropped the afternoon match over the Xavier Musketeers (3-0, 0-0 Big East), 25-19, 18-25, 25-22, 23-25, 15-5.Β Xavier outhit the Bulls, .263 to .206, as the match was even throughout.

In game one, the Bulls took Xavier to the fifth set. The intense play throughout all five sets was infectious. UB won set one, 25-19 as the Bulls outhit Xavier .387 to .167 with Cali Assaley having five kills. Mandy Leigh had 12 of the 15 assists in the set.

The tables turned in the second set as Xavier dominated with attacks. UB failed to only hit .160 with Xavier hitting .565. The third set was tight as UB took it, 25-22. Jenna Sonnenberg had a set high of 10 digs. Katrin Trebichavska had six kills in the set.

The Bulls had the opportunity to close out the match in the fourth set, but the Musketeers had other plans. Xavier was down 22-20, but would capitalize on two attack errors by the Bulls. The fifth set was dominated by Xavier as they outhit the Bulls .444 to .095. Β

Trebichavska had game-highs with 19 kills and six aces. Abby Leigh added 10 kills as Assaley finished with 9. Mandy Leigh had 41 assists.

UB rebounded as they took down the Cleveland State Vikings (0-3, 0-0 Horizon) to close out the festivities, 25-23, 15-25, 25-15, 25-22. The contest was tight as there were 20 ties and 8 lead changes.

UB won the first set as they had 20 kills compared to Cleveland State's nine while hitting .318. Trebichavska led the way with six kills in the set as Emma Gielas had five.

After a rough second set, UB battled it out to win the third set in decisive fashion, 25-15. The Bulls had a hit rate of .436 as Cleveland State hit .167. Hayley Montoya had eight of the Bulls' 13 digs. Maria Futey had six kills, a set high.

In an evenly matched fourth set, the Bulls would get down early and fight back. In the set alone there were 11 ties and four lead changes. UB finished the set and match on a 3-0 run to take it 25-22. M., A. Leigh, Stacia Gollogly, andΒ Assaley each had block assist in the set.

Overall, the defense finished with 67 digs with Montoya and M. Leigh leading the charge with 18 apiece. Futey added 11. The team finished with seven blocks.
