BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team put forth another dominant effort as they cruised to a 4-1 victory over Niagara at UB Stadium on Sunday night.
Sophomore Arianna Zumpano led the Bulls with a pair of goals on a team-best four shots, including three on goal.
Offense was at a premium in the early going with both squads managing limited scoring opportunities. Zumpano made an immediate impact off the bench in the 36th minute as she broke free and ripped a shot on goal but it banged off the right post.
The Bulls offense continued to attack, and it paid off in the 42nd minute as Abbey Callaghan played a ball up field to Cashlin Copley who found Zumpano and she drilled a shot into the bottom right corner of the net to give UB a 1-0 lead at the half.
After a slow start to the second half for both teams, Niagara got on the board in the 60th minute to even the game at one.
Buffalo responded less than a minute later as Ellie Simmons played a ball to Marissa Foster who found Jasmine Guerber in the middle of the box, and she banged a shot into the back of the net to give the Bulls a 2-1 lead.
The Bulls continued to attack in the 72nd minute as Callaghan played a ball through to Guerber who flicked it up to Leah Wengender and she one-timed a shot for a beautiful goal to put UB up 3-1.
Buffalo added their fourth and final goal of the night in the 81st as Wengender poked the ball loose from a Niagara defender and played a great ball through to Zumpano who put on the moves and curled a shot into the top left corner bar down to secure the 4-1 victory.
The Bulls doubled up the Purple Eagles on shot attempts, 16-8, while also having an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal and a 6-2 edge in corner kick opportunities. Zumpano was named Player of the Game for her stellar efforts in the win. Fifth year goalkeeper Emily Kelly picked up her second straight win to start the year, recording two saves on the night.
"It is the hardest part of the game, putting the ball into the back of the net, so to see it go in eight times over the first few games is a great thing," said head coach Shawn Burke. "We really showed our depth. Some of our players didn't play up to their high standard but there were players ready to go and I'm really proud of the collective effort tonight.
The Bulls return to action on Sunday, August 28th as they travel to Piscataway, NJ to face off against 2021 Final Four participant Rutgers at 1pm.
