Bulls Sweep Saturday Doubleheader

DEKALB, IL – The University at Buffalo softball team ran its winning streak to four games on Saturday as the Bulls swept a doubleheader at Northern Illinois, winning the first game 8-5 in extra innings, followed by a 9-6 win in the nightcap. The Bulls evened their MAC record at 13-13 with the two wins.
In the first game, UB got out to an early lead scoring runs in each of the first three innings. A sacrifice fly from Alexis Matheney in the first inning scored Anna Aguon, while Madison Fernimen sent one over the left center field wall in the second, giving UB a 2-0 lead. A third inning single from Brianna Castro scored another one.
The Huskies got on the board with a run in the bottom of the fourth, but a home run from Rachel Steffan in the top of the fifth put UB ahead 4-1. NIU scored in the bottom of the fifth and three more in the bottom of the sixth to take a 5-4 lead, but the Bulls had one more answer in them.
It was Steffan who went deep again, sending a solo shot over the right center field fence to tie the game up at 5-5, sending the two teams to extra innings, where the Bulls posted a two-out rally in the eighth.
Celyna Shaw hit a two-out single and the Bulls loaded the bases after a pair of walks. Alexis Lucyshyn singled down the left field line to score two runs. Another single from Castro made it a three-run inning in the eighth. The Huskies went down in order in the eighth.
Lucyshyn picked up her 11th win of the season as she struck out five. Steffan and Castro each had a pair of hits, while the two, along with Lucyshyn recorded two runs batted in.
In game two, the Bulls again got out to an early lead, scoring three runs in the top of the first. Steffan continued to rake, hitting her third home run of the afternoon with a two-run shot. A sacrifice fly from Fernimen scored Castro for the third run.
The Huskies scored one each in the bottom of the first and second, but UB scored two more in the third. Alexis Matheney doubled to left center and came home to score on an NIU error. A double from Ally Sobaszrk scored Fernimen, giving UB the 5-2 lead.
NIU scored again in the bottom of the third, but the Bulls scored three more times in the fourth. Castro singled home Steffan, who opened the inning with a triple. UB then loaded the bases as an Olivia Kincanon single scored Lucyshyn. Sara Kelly hit a sacrifice fly to make the score 8-3.
Northern Illinois scored one more in the bottom of the fifth, but UB responded in the sixth as a pinch hit single from Kate Vara scored Matheney. NIU had one last push as the Huskies scored two in the bottom of the sixth, but got no closer.
Julia Tarantino struck out five as she picked up her 10th win of the season. UB had 12 hits, including 3-for-3 games from Steffan and Matheney. In all, Steffan went 5-for-6 in the doubleheader.
The two teams conclude the regular season tomorrow at 1pm ET.
