WILLIAMSVILLE, NY – The University at Buffalo women's tennis team used a huge performance in singles as the Bulls picked up their sixth straight win to open the season with a 5-2 win over Bucknell on Sunday afternoon at the Miller Tennis Center.
Bucknell claimed all three matches in doubles to get out to the early lead, but from there the Bulls won five of the six matches in singles action. Sophomore Mariana Carvajal Torres won 6-3, 6-4 at fifth singles to get the Bulls on the board and then Hsin-Yuan Shih overcame a slow start to give the Bulls a lead with a 7-5, 6-1 win at second singles.
Ambre Amat won her first set in a tie breaker, picking up a 7-6, 6-3 win and then the Bulls clinched the match as Lolina Schietekat Sedas won 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 at sixth singles. Senior Pia Schwarz won her match at first singles 5-7, 6-3, 6-1. The only match the Bulls fell in was a back and forth classic at fourth singles, in a match that last just under two and a half hours.
"I was happy with the way we bounced back after some tough doubles matches," said head coach Kristen Maines. "I thought we showed great energy and focus in all six of the singles matches. Overall, there was just some really great tennis being played today and I'm glad we came out on the winning end!"
The Bulls continue their homestand on Friday with a pair of matches beginning at 1pm against Siena, followed by a 7pm match against St. Bonaventure.
