Bulls Defeat UTEP on Final Day of Lobo Classic

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – The University at Buffalo softball team defeated UTEP 4-1 in game one before falling to the hosts, New Mexico, 6-2 in game two to wrap up play at the Lobo Classic.
In game one, offense was at a premium over the first three innings, but the Bulls broke through in the top of the fourth as Madison Fernimen led off the inning with a single and Rachel Steffan followed with an RBI double to left and advanced to third on the throw. Anna Aguon capitalized as she hit a ball to right for a sac fly RBI to right to give the Bulls a 2-0 lead.
UTEP added a run in the bottom of the inning, but Lucyshyn and the UB defense held the Miners hitless over the next two innings. Buffalo added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh as Brianna Castro led off with a single and Olivia Kincanon followed with a two-run blast to straightaway center field to put UB up 4-1 lead and that would be all Alexis Lucyshyn would need as she secured the victory with a strikeout to end the game.
Lucyshyn picked up the win allowing just one run on six hits while striking out five in a complete game effort.
New Mexico struck first in game two as they scored two runs on three hits and a UB error to take an early lead and they would add to their lead in the bottom of the third on a solo home run, but sophomore Julia Tarantino answered with a strikeout to limit the damage.
The Bulls got on the board in the top of the fifth as Castro led off with a single and Kincanon drew a walk before Sara Kelly laced a single to left to cut the lead to 3-1. Later, Fernimen lined a hard-hit ball off the glove of the second baseman and into the outfield to score Kelly and pull the Bulls within one.
Buffalo put a runner in scoring position in the top of the sixth but could not plate a run and that would prove to be costly as the Lobos added three runs on four hits to take a 6-2 lead and that would be the final.
The Bulls return to action next weekend as they take part in the Lion Classic, hosted by Southeastern Louisiana, March 4-6.
