
Bulls Fall to Boston College in the First Round of the NIVC

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The University at Buffalo women's volleyball team (19-14, 10-8 MAC) lost in the first round of the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC) at the hands of Boston College (20-13, 7-11 ACC).
In the 32-team field, Boston College hosted the Bulls as well as St. John's and Binghamton. This was the program's first appearance in a postseason tournament.
The Bulls dropped the match in straight sets, 18-25, 17-25, 25-27. There were 22 ties and 11 lead changes in the match. The key difference in the match was that Boston College finished with a hitting percentage of .366 compared to Buffalo's .228. The Bulls struggled on the serve as they allowed seven aces while only getting one.
In the first set, the Bulls would take one-point leads until the Eagles took a 16-15 lead. Boston College then started to run away, taking the set 18-25. The Eagles were dominant as they hit .429 in the set with 12 kills. Buffalo hit .250 in the set, but had five attack errors and three service errors. Courtney Okwara led the Bulls with three kills while hitting .500.
In the second set, Boston College led wire to wire taking advantage of the lack of offense from Buffalo. The Bulls hit .088 for the set with just nine kills. Abby Leigh, Okwara, and Emma Gielas each had three kills with Mandy Leigh having eight assists. The Eagles had a hitting percentage of .371 and had 17 kills.
Buffalo had the opportunity to take the third set. Up 3-0, the Bulls would take a 15-11 lead out of a Boston College timeout. The Eagles then battled back and took an 18-17 lead. Buffalo regained a 23-21 lead, but Boston College tied the match at 23. The Bulls would get to set point twice, but unfortunately the Eagles finished the match on a 3-0 run. The Bulls outhit the Eagles, .333 to .324 in the set.
Mandy Leigh finished with 29 assists as Courtney Okwara and Emma Gielas led the Bulls with 10 kills each, as Okwara finished with a hitting percentage of .562.
