Bulls Win in a Flash Against Kent State

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo women's volleyball team (13-10, 5-6 MAC) swept the night away on Friday evening with another huge win over Kent State (12-10, 3-8 MAC). It wasn't déjà vu as the Bulls swept the Golden Flashes in back-to-back nights, 25-16, 26-24, 25-13. UB improved to 7-2 at home this season with five home games remaining.
In total, there were just 10 ties and eight lead changes, all of which occurred in the second set.
Once again, Kent State struggled on the attack as they finished with a .162 hitting percentage, compared to the Bulls' .281.
In the first set, the Bulls took an early 6-1 lead and never looked back. Cali Assaley and Emma Gielas led the team with four kills each. Mandy Leigh and Olivia DeBortoli added three kills apiece.
The second set was full of ups and downs. The Bulls trailed 8-5, but with two service aces courtesy of Abby Leigh, UB took a 10-9 lead forcing a Kent State timeout. Out of the break, the Golden Flashes scored three straight points taking a 12-10 lead. With Kent State holding a 22-18 lead, the Bulls called their last timeout. After a UB service error, Kent State was just one point away from taking the set, but the Bulls fought back. Gielas had back-to-back kills giving the Bulls a 25-24 lead. Assaley would finish it off with a service ace. In total, the Bulls had five service aces in the set, four coming from A. Leigh.
In the final set of the night, UB was off to an early 5-0 lead and went into cruise control winning the set 25-13. Lauren Otten had two kills in the set for the Bulls. A. Leigh added three more service aces, giving her a total of seven on the evening.
M. Leigh closed out the evening with 37 assists, good for 12.33 per set. Maria Futey (13), Katrin Trebichavska (13) and Cali Assaley (11) finished in double figures in digs.
The Bulls still sit in eighth place in the MAC and will have a huge matchup against Central Michigan (12-8, 5-4 MAC) next Saturday at home.
The Bulls are back in action on Friday, Oct. 28 as they host Eastern Michigan at 6 p.m.
