The Bulls Finish Third at the Tommy Evans Invite

AKRON, Ohio – The University at Buffalo cross country team compete in the 53rd Annual Tommy Evans Invitational hosted by the University of Akron on Saturday afternoon. The men finished in third place with a total score of 71 as the women finished third with 64 points.
On the men's side, the race was a lengthy 4 mile competition through the Silver Creek Cross Country Trails. Leading the charge for the Bulls was Alex Hislop who finished in ninth place in a time of 20:16.1. WIlliam Marchant was right behind as he finished in 11th place in 20:16.3. Patrick Hazlitt placed 17th with a time of 20:34.6. Making their UB debuts were Cory Demo and Michael Neeson. Demo finished 18th in 20:35.4 as Neeson finished in 19th in 20:37.6.
"The men's goal was to hold the pack together through two miles and then work towards the front," stated Associate Head Coach Todd Witzleben. "We got a little too spread out. For many this was their first cross country races in two years. We'll be more prepared for our next race."
The women's team had a solid 5k race as two Bulls finished in the top-10. Riley Jones placed third in 18:07.9 with Alexia Hecico finishing seventh in a time of 18:24.1. Making her UB debut was Anya Schmitt who placed 12th in 19:00.2. Lily Meek (17th place, 19:26.5) and Jade Dennis (28th place, 20:06.3) rounded out the top-five for the Bulls.
"This was an opportunity to get an evaluation on fitness and racing," stated Head Coach Vicki Mitchell. "We have a lot of new faces and a lot of work in front of us. This is a stronger group than last year, but we need to continue to push limits each week to be more competitive each race."
The Bulls will be off next week as they'll be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 18 as they travel to the University of Rochester.
