BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo cross country and track & field programs are excited to welcome four more extremely talented and motivated student-athletes to the programs. Drawing from within New York State and internationally, this group represents some of the best young talents the programs have ever brought in and will continue to grow both programs to new levels.
Zahra Amos, Perth, Australia – Churchlands Senior High School
Zahra Amos comes in with a personal best of 5'-08.00" in the high jump and has competed at an extremely high level consistently and has represented Western Australia in National competitions. She has recently begun the long jump (personal best 18'-04.00"), and triple jump (37'-08.00") and is an area we expect to see great development during her career at UB. She will be majoring in health sciences.
"She has an amazing personality with some great talent that will strengthen our team," stated Coach Nick Collins. "With a best of 1.73-meters in the high jump she'll be extremely competitive immediately and possesses some great leadership ability and drive that will be a boost to her new teammates here in Buffalo. I'm looking forward to seeing what she can achieve in here college career!"
Jermaine Ewers, Brooklyn, N.Y. – Medgar Evers Preparatory School
Jermaine Ewers will be focusing on the short sprints, with a personal best of 10.71-seconds in the 100-meter dash and 22.19-seconds in the 200-meter dash, he will have an immediate with our program. An outstanding student, he will be majoring in mechanical engineering.
"I am very excited about the addition of Jermaine to our team," stated Coach Charone Williams. "He's a very versatile and will be able to contribute to every area of the sprints, returning our relays to the national conversation."
Greta Rastelli, Fermo, Italy – Leonardo da Vince Higher Education Institute
Greta Rastelli is an outstanding sprinter from Fermo, Italy, with personal best marks of 7.55-seconds in the 60-meter and 11.81-seconds in the 100-meter dash. Her energy and passion for the sport is contagious, as she will bring in a level of new excitement to our already building women's sprint program. Rastelli will be majoring within the science field of study.
"She will be a force to be reckoned with," stated Coach Williams. "She brings both speed and experience with her to our program and she will be an integral part to our sprints group."
Johann "Hans" Matzal, Syracuse, N.Y. – Faith Heritage School/Purdue University (transfer)
Johann "Hans" Matzal is transferring in from Purdue University, and will be continuing his degree in management information systems within the Jacobs School of Management. Matzal's credentials include being the 2019 NYS Champion in 800-meter run, running 1:52.02, and holds a personal best in 600-meter run of 1:20.37. The tradition of UB's middle distance, most recently with Second Team All-American Leon Atkins, has helped continue to attract strong middle-distance runners to UB. No doubt, Matzal will excel to new levels for the Bulls.
"As a former N.Y. State Champion in the 800 meters, Hans should be able to make an immediate impact in the MAC," stated Associate Head Coach Todd Witzleben. "He'll benefit from training with our middle-distance group that has already experienced much success."
