BOWLING GREEN, OH – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team saw their 2021 season come to an end as the Bulls fell to top-seed Bowling Green 1-0 in the Mid-American Conference Tournament semifinals on Thursday evening at Cochrane Stadium. Â
The Bulls had their first look of the game in the 16th minute as Gianna Yurchak ripped a shot on goal, but Lili Berg made a nice save.
The Falcons struck first in the 27th minute as Lacee Bethea converted a breakaway opportunity with a shot into the bottom left corner of the net to give BGSU a 1-0 lead and that would be the score at the break as the Falcons held UB without a shot for the rest of the opening half.
Buffalo would come out aggressive to start the second half 55th minute as the Bulls were awarded a free kick just outside of the top of the box, Marcy Barberic took it and banged a shot off the crossbar. Barberic had another look just a minute later, but Berg made the save.
Later, in the 80th minute, Katherine Camper had a good look from just outside the box but her shot sailed high and out of play. The Bulls defense held strong the rest of the half, surrendering just one shot, but the offense was unable to break through as the Falcons held on for the victory.
Buffalo held a narrow 8-6 edge in total shots and had the game's only corner kick. In net, Emily Kelly made two saves for UB while Berg made a pair of stops for the Falcons. Freshman Kaya Schultz was named Player of the Match by the UB coaching staff.
"Unfortunately a poor first half put us in a really tough spot and you can't spot good teams like Bowling Green like we did today," said head coach Shawn Burke. "So proud of the fight and determination until the very end. We were really good for 45 minutes tonight but unfortunately it wasn't enough."
"I'm so proud of our seniors and how high they have raised the bar here at UB. As talented as they are on the field, they will be missed for their character and presence."
The Bulls finished the season with a 13-4-3 overall record.
