
Bulls Soar Past Eagles

YPSILANTI, MI – The University at Buffalo volleyball team rode the hot hand of Emma Gielas as the sophomore finished with 19 kills in a 3-1 win at Eastern Michigan on Friday night. The win was Buffalo's 11th of the year and the fourth in MAC play.
The Bulls took the match 27-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-16 as Buffalo outhit Eastern Michigan .186 to .157. Buffalo trailed 12-9 in the opening set, but the Bulls went on a 9-2 run as a service ace from freshman Maria Futey put them ahead 18-14. EMU would regain the lead at 22-20, but three kills from Gielas fueled a 4-0 run to put the Bulls back ahead. Eastern Michigan fought off two set points, but a Gielas kill ultimately claimed the set, 27-25.
Buffalo led for much of the second set, leading by as much as 18-13, but a late Eastern Michigan run gave the Eagles the set to tie things up. The third set was also close as the teams were tied at 20-20 late. The Bulls scored three straight points as a kill from Courtney Okwara put Buffalo ahead 23-20. The Eagles would tie it again at 23-23, but a kill from Milla Malik and an EMU attack error clinched the set for the Bulls.
UB had its most dominant set in the fourth as Buffalo hit .444, opposed to .152 for EMU. A block from Futey opened up a 14-9 lead in the fourth and the Bulls never looked back. The Eagles pulled within 19-16, but it would be Eastern Michigan's final points as the Bulls ended the match on a 6-0 run. Malik had a pair of kills in the run and the match was capped off on a service ace from freshman Mandy Leigh, UB's eighth ace of the night.
Gielas tied for match-high honors with her 19 kills as she hit .417 with just four errors on 36 swings. Malik and Okwara each finished with 10 kills and Futey had seven. Leigh dished out 41 assists to go along with two kills.
Malik and Futey paced the strong serving night as each player finished with three aces. Leigh and Gielas had the other two.
Defensively, Leigh and Futey each had 13 digs, while Jenna Sonnenberg had 11 and Malik finished with 10. The Bulls finished with 10.0 total blocks, led by six from Okwara, including three solos.
The Bulls continue their road trip tomorrow afternoon at Central Michigan. The match will begin at 4:00 pm and will be broadcasted live on ESPN3.
