
Bulls Fall To Central Michigan, 3-1

MT. PLEASANT, MI – The University at Buffalo volleyball team closed out the weekend on Saturday with a 3-1 loss at Central Michigan.
The Chippewas took the contest 25-18, 25-20, 20-25, 25-21 as CMU narrowly outhit the Bulls .205 to .204. However, Central Michigan had 58 kills opposed to just 43 for Buffalo and eight aces, while UB had just one.
While CMU led for the majority of the first two sets, the Bulls took a 12-8 lead in the third. Leading 16-11, UB scored the next four points, including a pair of kills from Courtney Okwara, extending the advantage to 20-11. The Chippewas would make a late charge, but a block from Okwara and Emma Gielas clinched the set for Buffalo.
Buffalo led 13-11 midway through a close fourth set, but a 6-1 run from the Chippewas put CMU ahead 17-14. A Gielas kill pulled the Bulls back within one at 21-20 late, but CMU scored the next two points and four of the final five points to take the match.
Okwara led the Bulls with 11 kills, while Gielas and Maria Futey each had nine kills. Futey finished with just one error as she hit .308 for the match. Sophomore Milla Malik had 10 kills. Freshman setter Mandy Leigh added 33 assists and two kills.
Defensively, Futey and Malik led the Bulls with 12 digs, while Jenna Sonnenberg chipped in 10. Leigh and senior Kyndal Bacon each finished with six. Okwara had seven blocks as the Bulls finished with 11.0 as a team.
UB returns home next weekend for its final two home matches of the year. The Bulls host Western Michigan on Friday at 6pm.
