BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (11-3-3, 5-3-3 MAC) played to a scoreless double overtime draw with Toledo on Senior Day at UB Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Bulls extended their unbeaten streak to four games while also clinching a spot in the MAC Tournament.
It was a defensive battle in the first half as the Bulls held the Rockets to just one shot in the opening 45 minutes of play. Buffalo had their best look of the half in the 32nd minute as Taylor Caridi and Tess Ford got their heads on a ball before Marcy Barberic settled it and ripped a shot on net but Emma Boutorwick made a great save, and the game would remain scoreless at the break.
Buffalo came out aggressive to start the second has as Barberic fired a shot on target in the 48th minute but Boutorwick made the save. Later in the 54th minute off a free kick, Leah Wengender got an open look from just outside the box, but Toledo was there for the save.
The Rockets went on the attack in the 67th minute and had a good look but Emily Kelly came up with a big save. Less than 10 minutes later, on the other side of the field, Abbey Callaghan took a free kick and found the head of a leaping Tess Ford who flicked it on goal, but Boutorwick made another save. Barberic would have one more scoring chance in the 80th minute but could not convert and the game would head to overtime.
In overtime, the Bulls were able to draw Boutorwick out of the net and Barberic had a chance with a sharp angle shot but it sailed just wide left. Katherine Camper also put a ball on net from just inside mid-field, but Boutorwick made a save to send the game to a second overtime period where each team recorded just one shot as the game ended in a scoreless draw.
The Bulls outshot the Rockets 16-4 overall, including an 8-2 edge in shots on goal, while also holding a narrow 2-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities. Kelly made a pair of saves on the day while Boutorwick made eight stops for Toledo. Junior Emily Lazenby was named Player of the Game by the UB coaches after leading UB to it's seventh clean sheet of the season.
"Four points and a pair of shutouts from this weekend are definite positives," said associate head coach Casey Derkacz. "Ultimately, I think we saw tired bodies out there for both teams today. I think we gave everything to have but unfortunately just didn't capitalize on our scoring chances."
Buffalo concludes the regular season on Thursday, October 28 as they welcome the Akron Zips to UB Stadium for an afternoon matinee at 3pm.
