
Volleyball Readies For Home Opener

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo volleyball team resumes action on Thursday when the Bulls host their first matches at Alumni Arena. UB will play Ball State at 6pm on Thursday and will again play the Cardinals on Friday at 2pm.
UB is 0-2 on the season, but showed much promise and potential facing the preseason MAC East favorites on the road last week at Miami.
Following the first weekend of play, the Bulls are being led by freshman Emma Gielas, who has a team-high 19 kills and is hitting .471 on the year. Sophomore Abby Leigh has 18 kills, while fellow sophomore Courtney Okwara adds 10 kills and is hitting .467.
UB has had equal production from the setter position as junior transfer Kyndal Bacon has 28 assists, while sophomore Emma Puzausky adds 27.
Defensively, Buffalo has four people in double figures in digs led by sophomore libero Jenna Sonnenberg who has 14 digs and junior defensive specialist Paige Beck, who adds 13. Also, in double figures in digs is Leigh and Bacon.
In the blocking department, the Bulls are averaging 1.50 blocks per set. Senior Lexi Nordmann leads the Bulls with six blocks, averaging 1.00 per set.
Ball State enters the matches with a 2-0 record after a pair of wins over Akron last weekend. The Cardinals used a strong defense as they held their opponent to just a .096 hitting percentage, while averaging 2.57 blocks per set. Ball State was picked to finish second in the MAC West, only three points out of first.
Per New York Department of Health guidelines, there will be no fans in Alumni Arena this season. Both matches will stream on UB's official YouTube channel. Links are available at UBBulls.com.
