
Bulls Show Promise In 3-0 Loss At Miami (OH)

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo volleyball team put forth a much better performance on Saturday night as UB hit .385 for the evening, but the Bulls fell to Miami, 3-0.
Miami took the contest 26-24, 25-19, 27-25 despite the Bulls outhitting Miami, .385 to .264, however it was 12 service errors and 27 errors in all for Buffalo that would be its undoing.
The Bulls raced out to an 8-4 lead in the first set as a service ace from freshman Emma Gielas forced Miami into an early timeout. The Bulls continued to lead 14-11, but the RedHawks would take the lead at 15-14. The two teams would trade the lead back and forth and Buffalo had a set point, but Miami sided out, scoring three straight for the set.
The RedHawks led nearly through out in the second set, but the Bulls would answer back in the third. Miami led early in the third, but back-to-back kills from Gielas put UB ahead 11-10. The RedHawks regained the lead at 15-13, but the Bulls responded with a 7-2 run as a kill from sophomore Courtney Okwara put UB ahead 20-17. Buffalo would fight off two Miami match points, but with Miami leading 26-25 the RedHawks would win a challenge call on a touch at the net, giving them the set 27-25.
Sophomore Abby Leigh led the Bulls with 12 kills as she hit .429, while adding six digs and a pair of blocks. Gielas had 11 kills and just one error, hitting .588 on the evening.
Okwara had five kills on seven swings, hitting .714, while senior Lexi Nordmann had six kills on nine swings, for a .667 hitting mark. Nordmann added three blocks.
Freshman Stacia Gollogly had five kills, while Monika Simkova added four. Junior setter Kyndal Bacon had 21 assists and a kill, while sophomore Emma Puzausky added 14 assists and two digs.
Defensively, sophomore Jenna Sonnenberg led all players with 11 digs, while junior Paige Beck finished with seven digs and had a team-high two aces.
The Bulls will return to action Thursday evening for their home opener when the Bulls host Ball State at Alumni Arena at 6pm.
