NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced its 2020 Indoor Track & Field All-Americans on Tuesday evening. The University at Buffalo men's track and field sophomore Shevaughn (Jay) Allen earned USTFCCCA Division I All-American honors for his accomplishments in the triple jump.
Allen won the triple jump with a distance of 15.82-meters at the 2020 Mid-American Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships. He also broke the school record with a dominant performance at the Doug Raymond National Qualifier hosted by Kent State with a jump of 16.09-meters. Headed into the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, Allen ranked 11th in the entire Division I in the event.
This marks assistant/jumps coach Nick Collins' first student-athlete to earn this honor.
"This is a huge honor for Jay," stated assistant/jumps coach Nick Collins. "His attention to detail and receptive attitude had set him up for a big finish to the season. Having the championship meet canceled mere hours after the best pre-meet practice he's ever had, I certainly think he is deserving, and given the opportunity, would have once again demonstrated a champion's competitive nature. I couldn't be more proud as a coach to call him my first Division I All-American."
Due to the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships being canceled hours before competition due to the coronavirus outbreak, the USTFCCCA changed the criteria to earn All-American honors.
The criteria is listed below from the USTFCCCA:
Normal policies dictate that All-America honors are awarded based on classifications of performance at the NCAA Championships.
Due to the cancellation of the 2020 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships, the NCAA Division I Track & Field Executive Committee adopted the following criteria:
A total of six male student-athletes from the Mid-American Conference earned this honor as Akron led the way with two, while Buffalo, Central Michigan, Kent State and Miami (OH) each had one.
