WILLIAMSVILLE, NY – The University at Buffalo women's tennis team concluded its fall schedule this past weekend, playing opponents from Rutgers, Cleveland State, and Bowling Green in the UB Indoor Invitational at Miller Tennis Center. The weekend was played as a hidden dual format with the Bulls playing a different opponent each of the three days.
On Friday, UB played Cleveland State and dominated the singles competition, winning all six matches, while claiming two other contests in doubles as Ambre Amat and Emel Abibula won their match 6-2 as did Pia Schwarz and Azra Deniz Comlek.
Four of the singles matches were won in straight sets beginning with a dominating 6-1, 6-0 win for Schwarz. Amat followed that up with a 6-0, 7-6 (3) victory and Gabriella Akopyan scored a 6-2, 7-6 (0) victory. Sophomore Hsin-Yuan Shih won 5-7, 6-2, 6-0 and Abibula also won in three sets, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5. Sophomore Nikoleta Antoniou-Karademitrou won in straight sets 6-3, 6-4. Both Abibula's singles performance on Friday, as well as the doubles win from Schwarz and Comlek, came against opponents from Rutgers.
On Saturday, the rest of the Blue and White met up with the Scarlet Knights. UB claimed three matches in singles. Schwarz won in a three-set battle at first singles with a 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 victory. Akopyan won her match in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, while Antoniou-Karademitrou also scored a victory.
The Bulls closed out the weekend on Sunday playing a familiar opponent in MAC rival Bowling Green. It was another good performance from Buffalo as it again swept singles action. UB also won three of four matches in doubles.
Amat and Abibula won their doubles contest 6-4 against the Falcons, while Schwarz and Comlek took their contest 6-2. The final doubles match was an all UB affair as Lolina Schietekat Sedas and Shih defeated teammates Alexis Tensfeldt and Gabriella Kivovich, 6-1.
In singles, Schwarz won again in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5. Amat scored a 6-4, 7-5 (3) win, while Comlek won 2-6, 6-2, 10-3. Akopyan lost just three games in a 6-2, 6-1 victory, while Abibula won her match 6-2, 6-3. Buffalo finished out the weekend with a 6-2, 6-1 win from Antoniou-Karademitrou, while Shih won her match, 6-0, 6-2.
"I am thrilled with the way we concluded the fall," said head coach Kristen Maines. "We made huge strides as a team and I can't wait for the spring season to get underway."
The spring campaign gets underway for the Bulls on January 31st with matches against St. Bonaventure and Niagara.
