KALAMAZOO, MI – University at Buffalo women's tennis junior Sarah Hartel won the singles title at the Mid-American Conference Individual Championship, hosted by Western Michigan, this weekend.
It was an all-UB final as Hartel defeated teammate Aleksandra Kachushkina 6-2, 6-3 in the championship match of the singles draw.
This marks a historic weekend for the bulls as both Hartel and Kachushkina qualified for the ITA Conference Masters Championships on Nov. 5-8 at the Rome Tennis Center in Rome, Georgia. It's the first time in program history that the Bulls have had a student-athlete qualify for nationals.
The Bulls got off to a strong start in singles action as Hartel cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 win over Ball State's Gabby Barrera and Kachushkina defeated Miami's Maria Luisa Olivera 7-6, 6-2.
Buffalo then dominated singles action on Saturday, as both Hartel and Kachushkina won in straight sets, with the former defeating UMass' Martina Pavissich 6-3, 6-3 and the latter picking up a 6-2, 7-6 victory over Miami's Maria Luisa Oliveira to set up an all-UB final where Hartel walked away victorious in the championship match on Sunday afternoon.
"I'm incredibly proud of both Sarah and Sasha," said head coach Kristen Maines. "They both competed hard, played smart and took their opportunities and the results showed!"
Up next, Buffalo will return to action on Friday, October 30 as they host Colgate at Miller Tennis Center at 12:30pm.
