
Women's Soccer Registers First Win Of 2016; Defeats St. Bonaventure, 3-1

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (1-2-0, 0-0-0 MAC) collected their first win of the season in the rainy home opener against St. Bonaventure on Thursday night, 3-1. Sophomore Carissima Cutrona led the Bulls offensive attack with two goals while junior Julia Benati finished off her strong night with a goal and assist in the victory.

How It Happened
- The Bonnies were able to test Cassie Betancourt early on as Jessica Scruggs ripped a hard shot right on goal where Betancourt made a strong save.
- Moira Petrie had the Bulls first chance of the game as she took a hard right-footed shot that just missed the upper right corner of the net.
- In the ninth minute, Julia Benati had a free kick from just outside the box but her hard shot was swallowed up by the St. Bonaventure keeper.
- Julia Benati had a great chance in the 16th minute but her long range shot was grabbed by the goalie, keeping the game scoreless.
- On a free kick in the 21st minute, Andrea Niper's blast was saved by the Bonnies keeper.
- Buffalo was finally able to break through with the first goal of the match in the 30th minute as Julia Benati was taken down in the box and awarded a penalty kick. On the ensuing penalty kick, Benati beat the keeper to the left corner for her first of the season.
- Sydney Cerza had the Bonnies best chance of the opening half in the 37th minute as she streaked in free and took a low shot on goal that Cassie Betancourt saved with her right leg, preserving the 1-0 UB lead.
- A minute later, Danielle Vis had a great chance but her shot just went high and out of play.
- The Bulls took the 1-0 lead into halftime where both sides faced a 30-minute lightning delay before the start of the second half.
- The Bonnies opened up the second half with a great chance but Bella Marra saw her shot ring off the crossbar and was cleared away by the Bulls.
- The Bulls extended their lead to 2-0 in the 57th minute as Carissima Cutrona took a short feed from Julia Benati and cut to her right where her right-footed shot found the right corner of the net.
- Carissima Cutrona made a great individual play in the 63rd minute as she stole the ball from the Bonnies defender, walked in all alone to the right of the goal and beat the keeper to the left post for her second of the match.
- The Bonnies broke the Bulls chance at a cleansheet in the final minute of play as Gretta LaCoutour sent a perfect corner kick into the box where Sabrina Sousa-Sampson headed home her first of the season into the left corner of the net.
Inside The Numbers
- The Bulls earned their first win of the season and beat St. Bonaventure for the third time in their last four matches.
- Buffalo held the 16-13 edge in shots as they led 9-7 in the opening half and 7-6 in the second half.
- Senior Cassie Betancourt collected her first career win between the pipes for the Bulls as she finished the match with seven saves.
- Carissima Cutrona finished off her first career two-goal performance in the win for UB. She also finished with a team-high four shots.
- Julia Benati finished with three points (one goal, one assist) in the win.
- Jessica Marlowe came off the bench and produced three shots for the Bulls.
- Freshman Mairead Martin and redshirt freshman Kayla Hospodka each appeared in their first career match for the Bulls on Thursday

Following the match, Carissima Cutrona was named Player of the Match after netting her first career two-goal game and collecting a team-best four shots on goal.
