
Darien Johnson Breaks 60 Meter Dash School Record at Great Dane Classic

STATEN ISLAND, NY - The UB men's and women's track and field teams both finished in third place in the Great Dane Classic hosted by University at Albany. Senior Darien Johnson led the Bulls' exceptional performances against some of the nation's top collegiate and club athletes by breaking the 60 meter dash school record. His time of 6.75 hit in the finals is .01 seconds faster than the old record of 6.76 set by Miles Lewis in 2013 with the time also being hit by Ryan Billian in 2014. Johnson's time also qualifies him for the MAC Championships in Feburary. Interestingly enough, former record holder, Miles Lewis, finished fourth in the 60 meter dash with a time of 6.80 seconds.
The men finished with 67.5 points, while the women's team earned 65 team point. This year's event was hosted at the new Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Staten Island.
In the field events the Bulls performed strongly for a second-straight week. Ryan Cribbin and Devon Patterson finished first and second in the shot put. They threw distances of 18.14m (59' 6.25") and 16.97m (55' 8.25"). Cribbin's best mark of the day was a season-best mark and added to his sixth-place finish in the weight throw where he launched the implement for a season-best attempt of 17.09m (56' 1").
Kaishuan Cathey placed fourth in the men's triple jump with a season-best mark of 14.72m (48' 3.5"), while Laurent Dure finished fifth in the high jump with a height of 1.99m (6' 6.25")
On the women's side three Bulls, Megan Patterson, Jaskiran Dhaliwall, and Miranda Daucher all made it into the weight throw finals. Patterson led the way for the UB trio by finishing in fourth place with a throw of 17.77m (58' 3.75"). The Colorado native went on to win the women's shot put with a throw of 15.46m (50' 8.75") and hit a indoor MAC Championship qualifying mark.
Joanna Hallisy cracked the top-eight in the shot put with her best attempt of 13.26m (43' 6"). Mikayla Pearce finished third overall and the top collegiate individual in the long jump with her attempt of 5.63m (18' 5.75").
Brian Crimmins impressed for a second straight week by finishing second in the 800m run. He hit a MAC Championship qualifying mark by running in a time of 1:50.64 and narrowly missing out on first place by .21 seconds.
In the women's 60 meter hurdles Christine Lyttle hit a personal-best time and MAC Championship qualifying standard by running 8.63 in the finals. Her effort earned a third-place finish and had the fastest time amongst collegiate runners.
UB saw two runners, Amy Shaw and Corinne Birchard, finish second and fourth in the 3000m run. Shaw's time of 9:45.15 was fast enough to his a MAC Championship qualifying standard. Meagan Hopkins and Morgan Mahoney placed eighth and ninth in the 5000 meter run to show the Bulls' depth in the distance races on the women's side.
JerMichael Bunch finished eighth place in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.27 seconds in the finals. During the preliminaries, Bunch hit a time of 8.20 to clinch a spot in the finals.
Joshua Gali placed seventh in the 400 meter dash by running the event in 48.49 seconds. Craig Kaiser ran the one mile run in a time of 4:14.81 to finish seventh. Barrett Kemp took fifth in the 3,000 meter run by running a personal-best time of 8:24.59.
The Bulls are next in action on January 23 when they head to Cornell University for the Upstate Challenge
