NEW ORLEANS, LA – The University at Buffalo, State University of New York's senior thrower Jonathan Jones was named Northeast Region Men's Field Athlete of the Year Friday by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
"Jon being honored as the Northeast Region Field Athlete of the Year is a testament to his incredible accomplishments and Coach Garnham's superior coaching," praised director and head coach Vicki Mitchell. "We are extremely proud of both Jon & Coach Garnham!"
Jones, a four-time All-American, won the shot put in record-setting fashion at the 2015 Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships on Feb. 28. He threw 20.06 meters to snap his own school record of 19.95 meters and his MAC Championships record of 19.59 meters, while also setting a new facility record. Undefeated this season, he ranks fifth nationally and is the top-ranked shot putter in the Northeast Region by more than two feet.
Jones and junior Mike Morgan will compete on Friday and Saturday, March 13-14 at the NCAA Indoor Championships at Arkansas.
