Siuciak Leads MAC Heptahlon After First Day

AKRON, OH – University at Buffalo sophomore Emma Siuciak leads the women's heptathlon competition after the first four events as the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships came to a conclusion at Akron's Lee R. Jackson Complex on Thursday.
Siuciak scored 3,295 points in the opening four events on Thursday. She holds a 65-point lead on Western Michigan's Kathryn Pickett (3,230) and leads Akron's Brittany Cheese (3,225) by 70 points. Siuciak, who set UB's heptathlon record of 5,193 points earlier in the season, tied for first in her specialty, the high jump at 5-7 (1.70m) and placed second in the shot put with a season-best 38-3.50 (11.67m).
In the first day of the men's decathlon, Mike Morgan is fifth with 3,634 points while Craig Howard stands seventh with 3,552 points. Howard won the 400-meter competition on Thursday in a season-best 48.68 seconds while Morgan was second in the high jump portion of the event at 6-4 (1.93m).
Jacob Sunday finished second in the men's javelin competition. Sunday had a best throw of 219-1 (66.77m) to finish behind Kent State's Brian Florek (223-5, 68.10m). Both throwers accomplished their scoring throws on the fifth of their six attempts. Casey Garbaty, the 2010 MAC champion in the event, finished fifth for the Bulls with a season-best heave of 208-0 (63.39m).
The UB women had three scorers in the hammer throw on Thursday. Shante' White finished third in the event at 194-11 (59.41m) with Kristy Woods taking sixth with a season-best 185-9 (56.62m) and Erin Miller scoring an eighth-place finish at 183-0 (55.79m).
Kara Patrick finished fourth in the women's 10,000-meters in 36:15.83. Kelly Truppo scored a season-best in the women's pole vault clearing 12-10 (3.91m) to finish fifth while Jenna Van Dusen tied for sixth at 12-4 (3.76m).
Through four events, the UB women stand third among the 12 MAC teams with 21.50 points. The UB men are tied for fourth with Miami (OH) at 12 points through two events.
Competition continues through Saturday.
