BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo men's triple jumper Austin Price has been named the Mid-American Conference's Men's Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the second time this season. The league announced its final choices of the 2012-13 school year from its Cleveland headquarters on Friday afternoon.
A Biomedical sciences major with a 3.613 grade point average, Price won the men's triple jump at last weekend's Mid-American Conference Championships for UB's fifth league title in the event since the Bulls joined the league in 1999. Price, the current UB school record holder in the event, cleared 49-9.75 (15.18m) to win the event by nearly two feet over Miami's John Cantwell (47-11, 14.60m).
This is the second time this season that Price has earned the league honor. He was also selected on April 26 following his record-setting performance at the Upstate Challenge where he broke Kamau Halim's 13-year old triple jump record.
Buffalo student-athletes were named as the league's Scholar-Athlete of the Week seven times during the 2012-13 school year. Besides Price, men's basketball player Will Regan was honored twice (December 14, March 22). Football's Colby Way (September 5), basketball's Tony Watson (February 21) and baseball's Alex Baldock (March 27) were also named Men's Scholar-Athlete of the Week. Swimmer Brittney Kuras was named the women's weekly winner on March 8.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during the week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
