Track Teams Complete Action at Florida, Princeton, Rochester Meets

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo men's and women's track and field teams completed action on Saturday at three separate venues with strong results at each meet. UB sent about 20 of its top athletes to the Florida Relays in Gainesville and its distance specialists to the Sam Howell Invitational at Princeton University. The remainder of the squad competed at the University of Rochester Invitational.
In Gainesville, the Bulls won championships in the men's and women's hammer competitions and posted top six finishes in four other throwing events.
Evan Palmer and Erin Miller won the men's and women's hammer throws, respectively, with each posting new season-best marks. Palmer won the men's event with a throw of 197-2 (60.10m) on his first attempt of the competition. He was only thrower to toss better than 60 meters and added more than five feet to his top mark. Palmer also turned in a seventh-place finish in the men's discus at 165-3 (50.37m). Miller took the women's open hammer competition with a season-best mark of 188-10 (57.55m) while Kristy Woods placed eighth at 169-5 (51.64m). In the invitational hammer event, Shante' White scored a second-place finish with a season-best performance of 190-10 (59.38m) as she tacked an additional foot to her top mark. Rachel Roberts also had a second-place finish in the women's shot put. Roberts turned in a top throw of 47-5.75 (14.47m) while Miller placed fifth at 46-3.25 (14.10m).
Jonathan Jones finished third in the invitational field of the men's shot put. Jones added a half-inch onto his season-best throw with a top toss of 62-2.25 (18.95m). He was the top collegiate athlete in the field as he finished behind a pair of unattached entrants. In the men's javelin, Jacob Sunday finished fourth at 213-3 (65.00m) while Casey Garbaty added more than three feet to his season best with a throw of 204-2 (62.24m) to finish sixth. Austin Price also added to his season-best distance in the men's triple jump finishing seventh at 49-1 (14.96m), an improvement of more than eight feet. Chris Reape tied for 13th in the men's high jump at 6-7 (2.01m) while Tomarris Bell finished 13th in the men's long jump at 21-7.25 (6.58m).
In other women's field events, Kelly Truppo placed ninth in the pole vault at 12-3.50 (3.75m), Katie Weston finished 16th in the javelin at 119-9 (36.50m) and Emma Siuciak placed 18th in the high jump at 5-5.25 (1.66m).
On the track, Meghan Manley finished 14th in the women's 800-meters in 2:09.18 while Ryan Billian placed 19th in the men's 110-meter hurdles in 14.10 seconds. Billian's time was five-hundredths of a second off Reggie Rucker's 2007 school record.
In relays, UB's men's 4x200-meter squad finished 11th in 1:26.65. Both of UB's 4x100-meter relay teams finished 16th in their races as both established season-best times. The UB men turned in a clocking of 41.34 seconds as the foursome included Darien Johnson, Billian, Micah Oliver and Miles Lewis. The UB women finished in 45.78 seconds as Jamiee McClary, Malayah White, Brooklynn Ventura and Crystal Graham were .13 seconds off the UB women's record.
At the Princeton meet, the UB women established a pair of school records. Kara Patrick broke Jenny Koeppel's 2005 mark in the 10,000-meters as she finished second overall in 35:04.57. The time shaved nearly 30 seconds off the old mark. Meanwhile, Katie Sanders also established a new mark as she finished ninth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Sanders turned in a 10:44.76 clocking to break Ellen Muster's 2010 record of 11:01.11. Chrissy Clarkin finished 17th in the steeplechase in 11:25.70. In the 1,500-meter events, Shelby Janutol finished 16th in the women's race in 4:39.07 while Brian Crimmins was UB's top men's finisher in 3:56.55, the fastest time of the season in the event for the team.
In Rochester, the UB women finished second among 14 squads with 137 points. The UB men placed fourth among 13 teams with 82.33 points. The UB women won eight events while the UB men took five.
Freshman Taylor Woods won a pair of throwing events for the UB women. She took the shot put with a winning toss of 41-0.50 (12.51m). Then she claimed the discus throw at 126-10 (38.66m).
Another freshman, Gina Carnovale, won the women's 200-meters in 26.38 seconds with freshman Tiffany Vera placing second in 26.55 seconds. Kyla Kenyon won the women's 400-meters in 59.05 seconds. Freshman Sabrina Bush took the women's 100-meter hurdles in 15.29 seconds with Kristina Arcury third in 15.60 seconds. Freshman Kaitlin McCadden won the women's 5,000-meters in 18:05.61.
The UB women also swept the relays. Asher Beasley, Vera, Carnovale and Arcury combined to win the 4x100-meter relay in 50.22 seconds. Carnovale, Donna Jeanty, Uwa Omorogbe and Vera combined to take the 4x400-meter relay in 3:59.07.
For the UB men, freshman Brian Cummiskey took the 200-meters in 22.39 seconds with Tyler Scheving finishing first in the men's 400-meters in 50.07 seconds. Jacob Wray took the men's 110-meter hurdles in 14.62 seconds. Adam Hume won the men's pole vault at 14-10 (4.52m). UB's 4x400-meter relay team of Cummiskey, Charlie Bascom, Jacques Garcia and Doug Hannon were also victorious in 3:23.38.
The Bulls travel to the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic next weekend.
