Busy Week for Track Teams
The University at Buffalo sent athletes to three meets last week and set two school records. Heptathlete Emma Siuciak competed at the California Invitational while UB's top distance runners were at the Princeton Larry Ellis Invitational. The remainder of the squads competed against Binghamton and Cornell at the Upstate Challenge as the UB women finished second and the UB men third.
Siuciak Breaks Heptathlon Record
Sophomore Emma Siuciak represented the Bulls at the California Invitational in Azusa, CA in the heptathlon competition. Siuciak established a new school record point total as she placed eighth overall among 24 finishers. Siuciak scored a total of 5,193 points in the two-day, seven-event competition, breaking Patrice Coney's mark of 5,116 set in 2007 when Coney won the Mid-American Conference title. Siuciak turned in her highest finish in the final event of the competition, the 800-meter run, as she finished third in 2:17.55. She also placed ninth in the 100-meter hurdles in 14.50 seconds and tied for ninth in the 200-meters in 25.72 seconds, lowering her season best in the race by .17 seconds. Chari Hawkins of Utah State won the two-day competition with 5,441 points. Individuals from top programs including Nebraska, Notre Dame and UCLA were also in the field.
Women's Throwers Pick Up Victories at Upstate Meet
At the Upstate Challenge on Friday, Shante' White was a double-winner for the UB women as she set season-bests in both of her victories. White led the Bulls to the top three spots in the women's hammer throw with a top toss of 198-4 (60.46m), adding three and a half feet to her previous best while Erin Miller also posted a season-best with a throw of 192-6 (58.68m), also adding three feet, to take second place. Kristy Woods finished third at 171-1 (52.14m). White also won the women's discus throw at 163-0 (49.58m), an increase of almost eight feet from her effort at Bucknell. Woods and Miller also took the top two spots in the women's shot put. Woods won the competition at 49-4.50 (15.05m) while Miller finished with a throw of 47-9.25 (14.56m).
Women's Sprinters Run Away From Foes
In Binghamton, sprinter Crystal Graham swept the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Graham set a season-best of 12.12 seconds to win the 100-meter race, posting the fastest time by a UB woman this season in the event as Jamiee McClary took second in 12.44. Graham also won the 200-meters in 24.84 seconds. Graham also anchored UB's victorious 4x100-meter relay to a 45.96 finish as she was joined by McClary, Malayah White and Brooklynn Ventura. Ventura also claimed the 100-meter hurdles in 13.95.
Price Breaks Triple Jump Record
At the Upstate meet, the UB men broke one of the oldest remaining records on the UB books. Sophomore Austin Price claimed the men's triple jump with a winning leap of 51-0.25 (15.55m). The distance was an inch and a quarter better than the previous mark of 50-11 (15.51m) set by Kamau Halim in 2000. Price added nearly two feet to his previous best leap this season.
Distance Runners See Action at Princeton
UB's distance teams were in action at Princeton's Larry Ellis Invitational on Friday. The Bulls had their highest finishes of the night in the elite division of the 800-meter run. In the women's race, Meghan Manley finished 12th among 51 entrants in 2:09.47. For the UB men, Tyler Scheving posted a season-best of 1:52.25 to place 18th in a 50-man race.
