BINGHAMTON, NY – The University at Buffalo track and field teams competed Friday at the Upstate Challenge against Cornell and host Binghamton. The UB women placed second and the UB men third among the three squads. Originally scheduled for Saturday, the meet was moved to a Friday start due to expected poor weather over the weekend.
Shante' White was a double-winner for the UB women as she set season-bests in both of her victories. White led the Bulls to the top three spots in the women's hammer throw with a top toss of 198-4 (60.46m), adding three and a half feet to her previous best set last weekend at the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic. Erin Miller also posted a season-best with a throw of 192-6 (58.68m), also adding three feet, to take second place. Kristy Woods finished third at 171-1 (52.14m). White also won the women's discus throw at 163-0 (49.58m), an increase of almost eight feet from last week's effort at Bucknell.
Woods and Miller also took the top two spots in the women's shot put. Woods won the competition at 49-4.50 (15.05m) while Miller finished with a throw of 47-9.25 (14.56m).
On the track, the UB women were dominant in the sprints. Crystal Graham swept the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Graham set a season-best of 12.12 seconds to win the 100-meter race, posting the fastest time by a UB woman this season in the event. Jamiee McClary took second in the 100-meters in 12.44. Graham also won the 200-meters in 24.84 seconds.
Graham also anchored UB's victorious 4x100-meter relay to a 45.96 finish. McClary led off the relay with Malayah White, Brooklynn Ventura and Graham taking the baton afterwards. Ventura also claimed the 100-meter hurdles in 13.95 seconds. She was the fastest in the qualifying round as well with a 14.27 showing in a strong wind.
The UB men won two events, breaking one of the oldest remaining records on the UB books and tying another. Sophomore Austin Price claimed the men's triple jump with a winning leap of 51-0.25 (15.55m). The distance was an inch and a quarter better than the previous mark of 50-11 (15.51m) set by Kamau Halim in 2000. Price added nearly two feet to his previous best leap this season.
Craig Howard claimed the men's pole vault competition. Howard cleared 16-0.75 (4.90m) to tie him for the school record with teammate Adam Hume, who set the mark in 2011.
The squads will compete at the Cornell Big Red Invitational next week.
