Track Teams Place Second at Cornell Meet
The University at Buffalo men's and women's track and field teams finished second to host Cornell on Saturday in the six-team Cornell Upstate Challenge at Barton Hall. The UB women scored 150 points to finish behind Cornell's 214. The UB men scored 109 while Cornell won the meet with 246. UB won a total of 11 events, setting two school records and a Barton Hall mark on the day.
Henry Part of Two Women's Sprint Records
Sophomore Asia Henry was part of two school records on Saturday. She won the women's 500-meters by one-hundredth of a second over teammate Donna Jeanty in 1:14.21 to Jeanty's 1:14.22, breaking Jeanty's school record of 1:15.42 set at last season's Penn State National Meet. Henry also helped the women's 4x800-meter relay team to a new school mark of 9:22.31 breaking a two-year old record. Henry ran the opening leg of the relay and was followed by Jeanty, Regine Lazard and Kyla Kenyon.
The Old One-Two
Besides Henry and Jeanty top two finishes in the women's 500-meters, the UB women also finished one-two in the 60-meter hurdles, weight throw and shot put. In the hurdles event, Jamiee McClary claimed victory in 8.66 seconds with Brooklynn Ventura second in 8.75. Kristy Woods won the weight throw at 56-7.50 (17.26m) with Erin Miller second at 55-5.75 (16.91m). Woods finished second to Becky O'Brien in the women's shot put with O'Brien, in her first meet of the season, taking the competition with a toss of 52-6.75 (16.02m) to Woods' 51-3.50 (15.63m). UB's 4x400-meter team of Crystal Graham, Ventura, Anna Holmes and McClary also won in 3:49.16.
Lewis Makes Impressive Debut
Competing in his first meet for UB after transferring from Long Island University, sprinter Miles Lewis won two events on Saturday. Lewis claimed the 60-meters in 6.80 and the 200-meters in 22.07. Teammate Andre Britton was second to Lewis in the 200-meters in 22.53. Lewis was also part of UB's 4x400-meter relay team which finished second to Cornell in 3:25.37. Lewis ran the third leg of the race while Britton, Will Cole and Isaiah Mask comprised the remainder of the foursome.
Another Win, Another Record for Golabek
Rob Golabek won the men's shot put, breaking a Barton Hall record that had stood for more than three decades. Golabek won the event with his final throw of 62-5.75 (19.04m), winning the competition by more than a foot. Golabek surpassed the Barton Hall record of 18.46 meters, set in 1978 by Dave Doupe. UB's Corey Knox finished third in the event at 56-0.50 (17.08m).
