BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo's Rob Golabek has been named the Mid-American Conference's Men's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week. The league announced their weekly award winners from its Cleveland headquarters on Tuesday.
Golabek earned the league's nod for the first time during the outdoor campaign and fourth time this school year after winning the men's shot put title at the 84th Annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, considered one of the top collegiate competitions in the country.
The Hamburg, NY native broke his own UB school record with his winning throw of 62-7.75 (19.09m) on his fourth of six attempts in the competition. He won the event by more than a foot over Arizona's Bozidar Antunovic, who finished second at 61-7.50 (18.78m). Golabek broke the mark twice on Saturday as he added four centimeters to the previous record when his first throw of the day went for 18.75m. His current throw is the top toss in the nation bettering Nebraska's Luke Pinkelman by one centimeter.
Since winning the 2010 MAC outdoor shot put title with a school record heave, Golabek has added nearly a full meter to the UB record in the 2011 season.
The junior was selected as the MAC's top indoor field performer three times this winter garnering honors on January 19, February 1 and 8. Golabek capped his indoor season with a first-team All-America performance as he placed eighth in the men's shot put at the NCAA National Indoor Track and Field Championships in College Station, TX.
The Bulls travel to the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic this weekend.
