BUFFALO, NY – For the third time in four weeks this season, the University at Buffalo's Rob Golabek has been named the Mid-American Conference's Men's Field Athlete of the Week. The league announced their weekly award winners from its Cleveland headquarters on Tuesday.
Golabek won the honor after breaking his own UB record in the shot put for the fourth time in four weeks when he finished second at last Saturday's Penn State's Sykes-Sabock Challenge with a throw of 62-0.50 (18.91m). Golabek's best throw came on his last attempt in the final round after fouling on his previous two throws. The junior uncorked a throw that surpassed his record set the previous Saturday in the same facility of 60-6.50 (18.45m). Penn State's Adam Eaton won the event by just three-quarters of an inch ahead of Golabek as he threw 62-1.25 on his final attempt. Golabek's throw also broke the Mid-American Conference indoor record by 1.25 inches set in 2006 by Eastern Michigan's David Adamak.
Since concluding the 2010 indoor season with the UB men's shot put record, Golabek has added an additional 2-5.75 (0.73m). His throw is also four feet better than the second top throw in the league. The throw is also the ninth best in the country this season, ranking him 12th in the nation.
The junior has been selected as the MAC's top field performer two other times this season garnering honors on January 19 and February 1.
The Bulls travel to the Akron Invitational this Saturday.
