Bulls Break Several School Records at Raleigh Relays

RALEIGH, NC – The University at Buffalo men's and women's track and field teams set five new school records and won five events as the Raleigh Relays, one of the largest meets in the east, wrapped up on Saturday at North Carolina State's Paul Derr Track.
Sophomore Casey Garbaty won the men's javelin with a school-record heave of 224-6 (68.43m), shattering his mark from last season of 209-9 (63.93m). Garbaty's throw was more than 10 feet better than the second-place throw.
UB's women won three individual events and a relay race at the meet. Sophomore Becky O'Brien smashed the women's discus record with her victory. O'Brien turned in a throw of 166-3 (50.67m) to break Sarah Vance's 2007 record by more than five feet. O'Brien also helped the Bulls claim three spots in the top 10 in the women's shot put. O'Brien finished second with a personal best toss of 51-1.75 (15.59m) while Kristy Woodswas third at 50-0.75 (15.26m). Freshman Erin MIller was seventh in the discus with a personal best 142-0 (43.28m) and ninth in the shot put (43-1.75, 13.15m). Woods also placed sixth in the women's hammer throw at 175-10 (53.59m).
Tiffany Maskulinski won the women's pole vault at 12-5.50 (3.80m). On the track, the Bulls took the top two spots and placed three among the top 10 in the second section of the women's 1,500-meters. Jackie Burns won the race in 4:39.98 with Ellen Muster next in 4:41.61. Katie Sanders was 10th in 4:46.26. Burns also ran the anchor leg on UB's winning sprint medley relay as the Bulls took the race in 3:59.96. Joining Burns on the relay were Jamiee McClary, Natalie Fildes andAllison Grimes.
Jacob Hagen took second in his section of the men's 5,000-meters in 15:11.30 while freshman Will Cole placed fifth overall in the men's 400-meter hurdles in 52.62.
The men's throwers also posted some impressive finishes. Rob Golabek finished third in the shot put at 56-11.50 (17.36m) with Jake Madonia taking sixth (55-9.75, 17.01m) and Alex Stamatakis placing seventh (55-5.50, 16.90m). Matt Gac placed fifth in both the discus (165-2, 50.35m) and hammer throw (196-5, 59.87m) while Golabek placed ninth in the hammer throw (183-1, 55.81m).
Running his first steeplechase of the year, Ryan Bloom set a personal best with his 9:27.31 clocking to take seventh place. Also turning in a seventh-place finish was Tomarris Bell in the men's triple jump at 47-3.50 (14.41m).
The Bulls next head to Gainesville, Florida for the Florida Relays next weekend.
